Format: Mass Market Paperback
I discovered this author when I picked up a book with three Christmas novellas including one by a favorite writer. All three stories were good, but the one by Molly O'Keefe was SO good that I started looking for her novels. I've been working my way through her backlist, and I've loved every one of her books that I've read so far.

The Scandal and Carter O'Neill is the last in a 3-book series about the Notorious O'Neill family. It's about the older brother who left the family in smalltown Louisiana to go off and make something of himself.

Carter O'Neill is like most romance heroes - he's tall, slim, nicely built, and powerful, your typical alpha male. But he's also a politician who is plagued by scandal. The scandals stem from two sources - his shady family and past, and a false claim that he got a woman pregnant and abandoned her, an accusation made publicly by the pregnant woman, Zoe Madison, for her own quirky reasons.

Carter decides to quell the scandal by pretending to date Zoe, even though they have nothing in common. He's a brooding and powerful public figure, and she's an offbeat, elf-like free spirit. As unlikely a couple as they make, you can't help rooting for them. Everything she does seems to bring public humiliation and the scandal down on his head. And by the end of the novel, when his career has come completely apart and he's left with nothing but the ruins of his reputation and Zoe, both Carter and the reader realize it's the best thing that ever could have happened to him.

This seems like tricky subject matter to tackle, but O'Keefe does it realistically, and beautifully. She handles both the passion and the humor with a deft touch, and I couldn't set the book down.
