5.0 out of 5 stars Love This Author
This was the first Pamela Britton book I read and she hooked me right away. I love stories the feature a female lead character who isn't of the same social class as the hero. (Think Cinderella). In my opinion Pamela Britton pulled this story off beautifully! I found myself laughing while I read this book and then crying in some places. After I finished I went and...

3.5 stars. I'm guessing that the Scandal is the fact that a Duke dares to marry below his station for those who are lost on the title. This was a good but not great book for reasons mention from another reviewer. Though I'm all for having flawed heroes and heroines, I can't get with a "Dumb" hero. Surely people make mistakes and that would have been fine had the author not remind me at almost every turn that Rein is stupid. Other than burn evidence, I wouldn't have thought him so. I would have thought that he'd done a dumb 'thing' but not that it was some character flaw. What woman in fantasy or reality wants a dumb man? Now, don't get me wrong, there are many of dumb folks among us, but the difference is they aren't aware that they are dumb. Sure, I know a few guys who don't like to be referred to as being dumb because someone in their past (Usually father) kept referring to them as such, but in this book, it just made me wonder why the heroine liked him. Rein could've just been spoiled and snobby and then was forced to change. But dumb does nothing for me. Plus, Rein not learning to do for himself was another serious character flaw. He should have gotten a job and pulled his weight. As it was, the heroine worked all day, came home to feed her grandfather and him, and then started having to please Rein at night. Sound familiar? It should...it's called REAL LIFE. Women read Historical Romances for the fantasy--to be taken away from real life. The middle of the book was hard to plow through, but it picked back up in the last act. Plus, I wasn't too sure about the murder being justified in this book. I was a little uncomfortable with it. What I liked about the book: Molly and Anna's relationship..as well as Anna and her grandfather's relationship. The scenes of testing sails on Rein's yacht and what follows afterward was the best scenes in the entire book. I will read more books by Ms. Britton, but please...no more 'dumb' heroes or heroines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Originality with spark, August 14, 2004

This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
The typical regency novel depicts the male character as a rake and the female as a young woman with no original thoughts but just waiting on the sidelines for her hero and marriage.

Not so with Ms. Britton's works. Her women have strong character traits that can bring strength to a relationship. I can't imagine women of that period not using their brains. Throughout history there have been women who have ruled countries, saved lives, been instrumental in creating things that made life better... Women just didn't get intelligent within the last century. As to the hero, not all men are perfect. Rein has learning problems, which at that time would not be recognized as such. But he builds a strong character and with Anna help, becomes a better man and father.

Ms. Britton's spunky characters and plot are both interesting and quite believable. I look forward to each and every book that she writes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but felt let down at the end, October 25, 2004

This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
I liked the premise, nobleman tossed into the world of the humble masses and forced to get by. I really liked that our hero struggled with his own feelings of inadequacy over his 'slow' mind. I thought that a hero with less than stellar opinions of his intellect was a really different and interesting character trait. I liked the heroine in general, though she didn't really stand out to me in anyway. The grandfather was also an enjoyable addition to to story. But somehow the ending just left me, well, dissatisfied.

If you've got spare room on your booklist, try it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of this author's best!!, June 18, 2004
This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
What happens when a handsome rake gets booted out of a carriage and dropped into one of London's meanest slums?

Fun, fun, fun!!!

Let me tell you, Pamela Britton just keeps getting better and better. Her books are such a remarkable combination of emotion and humor. SCANDAL is no different.

Rein Drummond finds himself in the unique postion of having to earn his inheritance by surviving for a month in a slum. Enter Ann Brooks (a heroine who I think it one of the author's best). Brilliant and beautiful she's determined to escape St. Giles by winning a contest sponsored by the navy. When she meets up with the hero she thinks he's the last thing they need. But circumstances force them together and what follows is a beautifully written, wonderfully funny tale that had me thinking this author is hands down one of the best writers in the business today.

Hurry up and click the 'buy' button. You won't be disappointed!!

3.0 out of 5 stars ok, March 26, 2006
This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
Having read Seduced and Tempted, I was dissapointed with the book. I didn't like the hero in this book, because he kept believing he was dumb. I was annoyed that he believed everything his classmates and father said about him. Come on! It wasn't him being dumb that made me annoyed but that he kept telling himself that he was dumb. I really don't believe the hero was dumb, because in the end, he found out who was trying to kill him. If he was dumb he wouldn't have figured that out. But why did he constantly, and even in the epilogue, kept telling himself that he was dumb?

Anyway, I also thought that the ending was abrupt. "Will you marry me?" That's all he says? No speech of declaring his love to her? No speech of declaring the heroine's love to him? Them coming together in the end was just so short. It wasn't anything spectacular as in some other romances out there.

If not for these two issues I would have given this book 5 stars. Yes, 3 stars to 5 stars is a big difference. But these minor issues in this book could have made this book great if they weren't there. This book was alright to read, but I wish that our hero was braver and tougher, and that the ending was more captivating. Now I really want to re-read Seduced and Tempted (also by Pamela Britton) because those books are absolutely wonderful (definitely way better than this book)!!!

P.S.
I just have to say that Pamela Britton is still one of my favorite romance authors!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh WOW!!!, June 19, 2004

Boy am I glad I preordered this book and selected overnight shipping because WOW was this book worth the price. I hate to gush but I'm just so amazed by this author. I was very impressed with her first book but to my joy she just gets better and better.

Anna Brooks is a market maid with a tragic past. When she meets Rein Drummond she knows immediately that he's a gentleman. Unfortunately she's also responsible for injuring the man and so she's forced to take him in. But he speaks as if he's a duke (he is) and he makes it perfectly clear that he wants more than one night from Anna. He wants HER.

Oh boy.

That's the set up, and it sounds simple, but Ms. Britton is a master at taking the familiar and making it her own. Believe me, I was laughing and tearing up the whole way through this book and when I was done I was so upset!! I didn't want it to end.

Don't hesitate to buy this book if you love Ms. Britton's work. And if you love to laugh and cry buy this book. Just buy the book<g> because I really don't think you'll be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not scandalous really, but very passionate, June 21, 2005
This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
Perhaps "Scandal" isn't the best title, but that isn't always the author's decision. Anyway, even though these may not be Britton's best characters (Rein, at least), their chemistry is undeniable. There are indeed some very...ahem...hot scenes. Others have complained about Rein not being more help to Anna; I found it in character considering all we know from him before she enters his life. I, too, wonder if she'll really be hapy with him over the long haul considering the apparent disparity in their intellects. I think, however, that was Britton was aiming for was that Rein have a learning disability. It could have been presented in a way that didn't sometimes make him seem "stupid," but people often live up to (or down to) others' expectations of them. Pehaps that was the case with Rein. It's an imperfect book, but has mostly good things to recommend it. I'd put it in the middle of the trilogy ratings wise (about a 3.8).

5.0 out of 5 stars Pamela Britton has penned a superlative Regency Historical, June 18, 2004
This review is from: Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
If you have been bewailing the decline of Regencies, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! Pamela Britton has penned a superlative Regency Historical that should set the Beau Monde on fire. Perhaps the best book I've read this year.

Rein is a young duke who has come into the title after banishment for killing his uncle's mean dog accidentally. His uncle is so incensed that he leaves the unentailed portion of the estate in trust, to be distributed to Rein only if he can survive a month on his wits alone. He's dumped in St. Giles district of London, left to his fate after being hit by a kite.

The kite belongs to Anna, a young gentlewoman down on her luck, who has had only too much experience living on her wits with her grandfather. She has wagered everything on the chance to win a contest sponsored by the Royal Navy. The Navy will pay a prize to the best set of sails, and Anna is determined she will be the winner.

That's the scene, and that's all I will say about the plot. SCANDAL is such a delight that I don't want to spoil your enjoyment. These two characters should go into that small group of memorable pairs including The Rake and The Reformer and An Arranged Marriage. SCANDAL is a novel in which every detail is perfect. Regency purists should love her command of the regency cant, and she should bring new fans to the period with two of the most exciting main characters in memory. ENJOY!
