Editorial Reviews

Review

"Set sail with Essex as she cleverly pits a bluestocking against a stiff-upper-lipped British naval officer and lets the sparks fly. Essex spices her fast-paced tale with fascinating details of ships and sailing and adds plenty of sexual tension, high-seas adventures, danger and desire. Readers will be on the edges of their seats reading this latest Reckless Brides tale." -RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 stars, Top Pick!)

I enjoyed reading this amazing story with lots of adventures, romance and great characters.

A drunk captain, lazy crew, a worthless ship, a storm, stranded on an island and steamy love scenes keep you entertained to the end.

I will say from the outset, I felt the story contained some holes that needed filling, but overall a really good read.

A Scandal to Remember by Elizabeth Essex is a delightful adventure on the high seas. Fast paced and compelling, it is a great read for a summer vacation!

Serious and determined Lieutenant Charles Dance finds himself assigned as the second officer on a two-year scientific expedition to the South Seas by the prestigious Royal Society. When he arrives at his ship, the Royal Navy Frigate Tenacious, he finds the captain drunk, the crew lazy, and the aging vessel in complete disrepair. To make matters worse, when the passengers arrive, respected conchologist J. E. Burke turns out to be a woman, which according to the lore of the sea, spells disaster.

Educated, organized and intelligent Jane Burke is a wonderful heroine. Granddaughter of Lord Thomas Burke, she is determined to leave the expectations of London society behind her and make a name for herself as respected scientist. Not all goes smoothly for her on the voyage, however, as the crew resents her presence, and she, herself, is surprised to find herself attracted to the sexy Lieutenant Dance.

As I was reading A Scandal to Remember, I was thinking that it would be five stars, but then I came to the flaw in this otherwise very well written novel. Without giving away too much, a major event occurs towards the end of the novel. While still fun to read, I found the story immediately following this event to be very cliche. The ending, however, reverted to the previously well written style and was very satisfying.
I’m giving A Scandal to Remember 4½ stars and I highly recommend it to everyone.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Did you ever start a book and keep putting it down, not because it was boring, but because you didn't want it to end? For me, this was that type of book.

I loved this book, I loved Dance and I loved Jane. I thought they were perfect together and I wouldn't change anything about this story.

I especially liked that they slowly fell in love, they worked together, they supported each other and against all odds, ended up with a HEA.

I have enjoyed each and every book I this series, but they are all so loosely connected, that you can enjoy them out of order without any confusion. I can't recommend this series, most especially this book, enough!!

I do wish they had actually said the I love yous - but they both thought it and showed it to the other. So I can overlook that.

Wowie, zowie, I loved both the hero and heroine in this book. I will say from the outset, I felt the story contained some holes that needed filling, but overall a really good read.

We have a sweet, little bluestocking - one of my favorite heroine types in our darling little Jane Eliza Burke, or J.E. Burke as she named herself in order to be able to go along on the Royal Philosophical Society's expedition to the south seas. Jane is a conchologist (I love this word) - an experienced knowledgeable naturalist with her expertise being in the study of mollusc shells. The Society assumed J.E. Burke was a man when they accepted her application - but "he" is actually Jane.

Our to-die-for hero is Lieutenant Charles Dance who arrives for his assignment on board the Royal Navy Frigate - the H.M.S. Tenacious to find a drunken captain, a good-for-nothing crew, a vessel that is sadly in need of repair and a sure-to-be enemy in the person of the bosun, Mr. Ransome. Now, here's where you can separate the gifted from the not-so-gifted writer. The manner in which Ms. Essex uses the character of Charles Dance to deal with his hellish circumstances throughout the story is a fine example of a truly gifted writer. In my opinion, Dance's daily struggles and the way he dealt with them - well, mostly, is what makes the story come alive and remain "real" in the mind of the reader.

Is there a romance? You betcha - can't you tell by the cover on the book? I strongly dislike these types of covers. They tend to deceive the reader in some cases and IMO can even hinder sales - now I'm off the subject. The cover is no indication of the story contained within the pages of this book. Is there a time on a deserted beach?

I won this book in a GoodReads First Reads Contest! This is the first book I have read by Elizabeth Essex and it most certainly won't be my last! This was a beautiful historical romance with such exquisite attention to detail that the reader will feel transported back in time. The language, details in propriety and locations immerses the reader early 19th century England and adventures on the high seas! I fell in love with Dance and Jane's story and found I had a difficult time of putting it down! I loved every delicious romantic second of this wonderful book! I highly recommend it!

It might be too soon for me to declare this, but I think I love shipboard romances. I know I love a woman stealing away on a ship disguised as a boy, and I recently read a fun book with a woman pirate captain, and now this one with a female scientist — a conchologist — going on a research expedition. All good!

Jane’s father is a famous conchologist (studier of shells, mollusks, barnacles, and the like), but what the world doesn’t know is that Jane does all the work for him. She draws and colors the illustrations, writes the studies, obtains research equipment, and corresponds with scientific peers. Her father is too proud to give her recognition, and too ashamed to let her go on an extended expedition with him because she’ll demonstrate her superior skills. Jane is fed up with his nonsense. She hops in her little sailboat, which she has packed just so with all of her supplies, and sails away to meet the naval ship that has been tasked with transportation.

Lieutenant Charles Dance has just accepted what he believes is a simple post. Since the end of the war, so many naval officers have sat around useless, so he is grateful for any job. But the Tenacious is not what he had in mind. The captain is a drunk who refuses to come out of his cabin, the ship is in such a state of disrepair that it would be suicide to sail, and the men onboard are lazy and belligerent. After much work on his part, the ship is finally ready to sail. And then a wide-eyed, buttoned-up spinster sails up and claims to be a member of the expedition.

You guys, Jane is awesome. No one wants her onboard, but with no objection from Lieutenant Dance, and a vague acceptance from one other member of the research team, she manages it anyway.
