Editorial Reviews

Review

"Witty banter, lively humor, and electric sexual tension provide an exquisite counterpoint to the more serious issues of spousal abuse and the lack of women's rights in this poignant, passionate, spicy story that pairs a marriage-averse heroine with a caring, determined hero and stretches out the disquiet until the very end." ---Library Journal Starred Review

From the Back Cover

One tryst was all she wanted . . .

From their very first meeting, Julia knew that Aidan Carr, the oh-so-proper Duke of Trathen, had a bit of the devil in him, a devil who secretly yearned for what he could not have, a devil who harbored a desire for her. So when she needed to be caught in a compromising situation, Aidan was the answer to her prayers.

One tryst just wasn't enough . . .

Aidan is supposed to be looking for a bride, yet his scandalous liaison with Julia is all he can think about. Hot, erotic memories of kissing her skin, falling into her bed, pulling her naked body on top of his own continue to torment and tempt him. What is it about this brazen seductress that he finds so hard to resist? And how can he stop himself from falling into her bed a second time?

Laura Lee Guhrke brings readers back to the turn of the 20th century when the nouveau riche Americans, the feminist movement and world wars would soon change the landscape of European culture. In her first book, LLGuhrke offered us young love rediscovered with more traditional characters: two aristocrats brought up to understand their proper role in life. This second book in the Abandon at the Altar series delves deeper into social changes during the era which influence the characters' romance.

The hero, Aidan, is a wealthy duke who understands his role in life. He sits in the House of Lords, rides his horse and carriage, and enjoys classical music. He is a traditionalist. The heroine, Julia, is a lady. She's always been a bit of a rebel, but as an adult she personifies the bad girl of the early 20th century. She smokes, drives a car, plays that scandalous ragtime music, and even gets a job. She is a modernist. Conflicting as their social views are, the one thing they do agree on is that they are attracted to each other; and have been since they met as teenagers. However, their romance has been star crossed since the beginning and it's not until more than a decade passes that something happens to change their course. The English have progressed to the point where divorces are now granted, however the power to bring cause for divorce is still mostly in the hands of the husband. In Julia's case, the only option she has is to be charged with adultery, and she uses Aidan to that end.

The bulk of the story focuses on the characters after the scandal of divorce. Julia is now a social pariah and Aidan is slightly tarnished in the eyes of the ton, although he is a wealthy, single duke so he's not given the cut direct.

This may be Guhrke's best work since AND THEN HE KISSED HER. It's not as good as that one, but it runs a close second. I was looking forward to Aidan and Julia's love story since reading WEDDING OF THE SEASON, the first in her new Abandoned at the Altar series, since they were, for me, the most appealing characters of that book.

If you read Book 1, you'll know that Aidan is the jilted fiance of the heroine of that book and Julia is her friend and cousin. You could tell that there were some undercurrents in Aidan and Julia's relationship and all is revealed in this book.

Here Julia finally has her divorce from her abusive husband. Unfortunately, to do so she unabashedly used Aidan as corespondent in an adultery charge to obtain it. We readers of HRs are pretty much aware by now that historically women had no power in their marriages and could not even divorce an abusive husband, so Julia was desperate to find a way to force her husband to divorce her.

You'll find out all about this in the book. You'll learn more about the 13-year history between Julia and Aidan and you'll see a beautiful romance develop between two people who superficially have been very antagonistic to each other.

The H and h of this book were very appealing to me. I love a good, noble and honorable hero, even if he seems a bit stiff and pompous on the outside. You just know he has hidden depths. And the heroine here is much more complex than she seemed in Book 1. She's more than the free-spirited, devil-may-care, cigarette-smoking, Mercedes-driving female of that book.

This was a well-written book. Laura Lee Guhrke seems to me to be growing and maturing as a writer and the relationships between her Hs and hs reflect this.

Unconventional divorcee asks conservative duke for employment due to her large debts. Hero hires her as his social secretary to help him find a suitable wife. Their frequent contact makes it harder for Hero to resist his strong & long-time attraction to her. He's been in love with her since they 1st met 12 years before & she was engaged to be married. Heroine has always known of his interest in her but she's only become aware of her sexual attraction to him & is frightened by it. She later succumbs to their mutual attraction but does not want to marry again. How will Hero convince her otherwise?

I wasn't very impressed with this Guhrke book & I usually am with many of her books. Although the writing & romance development was good I just didn't care much for the heroine. She seemed too self-absorbed. When she & Hero 1st met when she was 17 she was carefree & self-focused. Twelve years later she was still self-focused & her carefree attitude morphed into a frenzied quest for freedom from responsibilities. The poor Hero suffered from unrequited love & being used & manipulated by her. And he still bent over to help her with her troubles. Hero is definitely not an alpha-male hero but I wouldn't call him a doormat either. He's just a nice guy who wants a good-enough marriage & family. But his heart is with heroine & he eventually is able to chip down her defenses by his good-guyness. Sexual chemistry was one-sided until ½ of the book. Sex scenes were detailed but there were only a couple scenes. I believed that heroine did eventually fall for Hero but Hero still seemed to love her more even at the end.

Somewhat recommended.
