5.0 out of 5 stars gossip is ever gossip --, November 6, 2005

Miss Charlotte Wyndham wasn't exactly a blue-stocking, although to be sure she did like to read and to write. The trouble began when she read Caro Lamb's shocker of a book "Glenarvon" about the failed romance between Lady Caro and Lord Byron. "I can do better than that!" thought Miss Wyndham, with the remembrance of her shabby treatment at the hands of the odious and arrogant Sir Maxim Talgarth still fresh in her mind.

Urged along by her new friend Sylvia Parkstone, who had her own agenda involving Sir Maxim, Charlotte devoted hours to her writing and before too long, KYLMERTH was nearly complete. But then, a new Sir Maxim appeared, or at least a man who seemed quite changed from the earlier hateful person-the one who, according to Sylvia-had loaned a large sum of money to Charlotte's father, and then, when the older gentleman couldn't pay up, saw to it that an unruly horse became a murder weapon. Who should Charlotte believe? Her heart said to believe Sir Max, but her brain still whispered Sylvia's tales.

Somehow the manuscript becomes the latest scandalous sensation, when it's published by a slightly out-of-the-way publisher, and Charlotte's new found hopes of happiness seemed doomed. Her mother and her uncle, with the aid of Sylvia's father, refuse to believe that Charlotte was responsible for the book, until finally, after a confrontation at the famous Parkstone Ball, the truth becomes known to one and all.

This is one of Sandra Heath's early books, clearly foretelling her years of success in the Regency world. As always, the writing style is clear and lucid, while descriptions of popular places in that era put the reader squarely in the picture. Characterizations are marvelous and very true to form. Brava!
