3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 close but no cigar October 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Let me preface this by saying that this is my first Karla Darcy novel. I love regency novels and have read too many to count. I saw the wonderful reviews and thought i give this book a chance--maybe it made me have too high expectations. Thought the plot was interesting, unique. However, it lacked substance, didn't feel moved by the characters. I know it's a good book when I get emotionally involved, whether it's laughing at a funny part, or feeling what the H/h is going through, crying with them and cheering them on. It's rare nowadays to find clean romance novels so I am willing to try another one of the author's book. Fingers crossed:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, Sweet Escape November 4, 2012
By Beth W.
Format:Kindle Edition
I very much enjoy Regency romances and found The Scandalous Ward to be a fresh plot with likeable characters. So many times the plot is a tired rendition of a young lady heading into town for the Season, with predicability ensuing. While I certainly knew where this would end up, I enjoyed the journey there more than usual. This was a quick read, that brightened a dull evening and I would enjoy reading more Karla Darcy novels of the same ilk.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Reluctant Duchess January 18, 2013
By Marcy
Format:Kindle Edition
It has been a while since I read a historical romance. Thank you, Ms. Darcy, for choosing me as an author sponsored giveaway winner, of this novel.

There are times where simplicity is the best avenue to attract and keep a reader. This book in an example of that. It treads lightly through history, romance and sexuality.

This is the story of an orphaned female forced to disguise herself as a male as she and her two male servants leave India for the protection of her new guardian. Upon arrival at her guardian's she decides to keep up the farce of being a young boy and grows up with the freedom to roam the grounds, fish and climb trees. She learns to play chess instead of how to curtsey. This decision of duplicity affords Leslie 5 years of a safe and secure life.

Her consideration of her faithful servants assures that they both have a role in the Duke's household, where she resides. They remain in strict adherence to fidelity to her even if they might not agree with her decision to play a role for which her body was not intended.

When her chicanery is uncovered, the reluctant bridegroom insists on a quick marriage in order to salvage their individual reputations. Pax, the Duke of Ruhaven, behaves in a behemoth manner at times. Instead of a well cultured girl, one who was bred to marry a Duke, he instead has a twined mess of a girl. She not only requires a wardrobe befitting a Duchess before being presented in society, she needs to be taught how to dress in those clothes. The same Leslie that took such pride in catching a trout just a few years prior, now needed to learn to balance herself in corseted gowns, simple slippers and upswept hair.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unlikable H April 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story was entertaining and intriguing and had me hooked but the H was an ass right the way to the end of the book. It's one thing to have differences in the beginning but the H didn't show the h a shred of kindness or compassion in her transition from boy to girl. He was older and more mature but certainly didn't act his age. It makes it difficult for me to like a book when I don't like a main character for such a large part of the book. I would have liked to have seen signs of softening on his part way earlier and then perhaps he could have been redeemed.

His passion filled novella that will make the reader completely miss the day while reading. Young Leslie has never had a home filled with love, so when she gets the opportunity to stay in the home of Lord Paxton, she jumps at the chance. There is just one problem. The duke thanks she is a boy. Leslie hides her true gender until she is revealed. In order to escape a scandal the Duke forces Leslie to marry him.
Now the fun begins. The two must fight against jealousy, rumors, and the rigors of proper society in order to find happiness in each other's arms. The reader will not be able to put the book down until, she finds out what happens to these to hard-headed lovers.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to strangle him October 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If success is defined as evoking emotion in the reader, Karla Darcy's current Regency is a success.

That Duke deserves to be strangled!

Leslie, the heroine, undergoes a remarkable transformation. Darcy's obvious love for research enables her to add the details that make the transformation and the heroine herself believable and memorable.

The story gets five stars. A Regency rarely has the staying power for me that this one has. Only Mary Balogh has held my interest more.

The book gets four stars from me, though, because IMHO one more quick going over by an editor would have smoothed out a few stylistic bumps that tripped me up while reading.

Great job! Do it again!

It was fine but predictable. I hate not finishing a book but had to sweep over many pages just to get to the good stuff and the end.

More About the Author

Karla Darcy is a fiction writer as well as a professional researcher who has always adored Jane Austen and all things Regency. Raised in Chicago she always hoped she'd be hired to work for the Encyclopedia Britannica or at the very least get a job writing clues for Jeopardy. After college, she ended up at an advertising agency. She didn't get to do much research but luckily got to write the slightly salacious entertainment for the Christmas party and other events where the agency's ads were parodied. Her favorite time period was England during the Regency period so it was a no brainer when she decided to write romantic fiction. It came as an unfortunate circumstance that a history researcher didn't have a clue how to write a book. Thanks to the advice of her favorite bookseller she found and joined a chapter of Romance Writers of America. These generous women were eager to help her learn the craft of writing and it wasn't long before she got the hang of weaving elegant stories of love in the Regency era.

Five Things you might like to know from an interview with Karla:

1. I can count to ten in five languages.
My father loved to learn funny sayings in other languages but the only thing I can remember is how to count.

2. I can recite all of the presidents in order from memory.
My family had a friend who took a Dale Carnegie memory course. One night at dinner he taught us how to memorize the presidents. I got an A in high school History class when the teacher challenged the class to recite them in order.

3. My secret guilty pleasure is watching the Ninja Warrior TV show.
Not the American version but the Japanese version. Even though it has English subtitles, the constant screaming by the Japanese announcer just adds to the whole experience. When you talk about real men, doing impossible feats of strength and not being muscle bound, it doesn't get any better than this. I'd prefer if a few more of them ran the course shirtless.

4. If I couldn't be a writer I'd want to be a radio announcer.
I worked in an advertising agency for years and did a couple of voice over commercials and really got a kick out of it. I have a raspy deep voice that sounds great on the radio and in the dark.

5. I am the world's worst procrastinator especially when I'm on deadline.
Unfortunately I do my best work when I'm up against a really short deadline. Adrenaline kicks in and somehow I get it done because I have a built in barometer that tells me just how much time I need to get something done.
