Unbelievable plot; hero deserved a better heroine,
By Anne M. Marble "Anne" (MD, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scandals (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really, really looking forward to reading this book. It combined a Victorian setting with a classic Gothic plot, and it had a heroine who had been unfairly tarred by scandal. All elements I love to read about. However, you can have all those elements and still have a book that simply does not work. Why? The heroine. Sometimes, she's clever -- but most of the time, she does stupid things. She yearns for the cad who almost took her virginity. And worst of all, she suspects the charming hero of murder -- even though there is no evidence at all. Steede deserved better than this! To make matters worse, the plot hinged on coincidence after coincidence, with gaping holes in logic. I gave this book an F at All About Romance.

Firstly let me put it on record that the only reason I've given this book a star at all is because you have to but in my opinion this was actually surposed to be a starless review.I made the mistake of buying this book after I read Neri's previous novel Stolen, which I thought was a darn good read, I whish I had saved my hard earned cash. This book was one of the most boringest book I've ever had the misfortune to come across, the dialogue was so " Oh, come on", the story line in itself was dismall, the characters totaly boring and lifeless not to mention childish. I find it hard to believe that the heroine could fill her days just supervising the staff and spend half the day choosing what to wear and how to arrange her hair.I must say this is one of the most awful romance novel ever written, I don't mean to put Miss Neri down for as I mentioned earlier, Stolen (her other novel) was very good, but this book should have never been published. I was ready to give up on this book after the seventh chapter but persevered due to the fact that I never leave a book unfinished, and I had spent good money on it, but believe me this was a very painful read. I recommend that one should rather read Stolen instead of this one, or better yet,buy a book from Connie Mason.

I liked it,

I found the characters in this book a little too good to be true, but I like how I didn't have to wait too long for Steede and Victoria to realize their love. And then the story continued to an even happier ending. Wonderful book.

I was caught by surprise a number of times in this book. I found it to be a creative and sensual encounter between two high-spirited characters.

How a rumor almost ruined their lives.,

Both Victoria and Steede were having to live down rumors. Steede decided to take a great leap of faith and ignore the rumors about Victoria and the miner Ned and believe that Victoria was a lady perfect to be his wife and the mother of his daughter Mary. Victoria on the other hand, wrestled through the whole story with the rumor of Steede killing his first wife. I still am not sure exactly why she had such a hard time believing in him, when he was nothing but kind and wonderful towards her. Even though there were many bizarre happenings - no one could really think Steede could have had anything to do with them. If she truly looked at the accident with the horse she would have to know he was not responsible. Perhaps it was more that she feared his rejection and a broken heart. But I did like this book. It might not have been as emotionally developed as others I have read recently - but it was still very very good. Victoria and Steede truly needed each other and their happy ending makes you smile!
