Book Description

February 28, 2010
Expert crafter and lover of Scandinavian design Clare Youngs presents a stunning collection of home wares, gifts, accessories, bags, clothes and more to stitch. Fans of the clean, elegant lines of traditional Scandinavian style are sure to be inspired by the 35 sewing projects in this book. Incorporating the finest elements of Scandinavian crafting traditions, inspiration is taken from a range of backgrounds including classic folk art and local needlework, as well as more contemporary sources. These delightful designs, each with clear step-by-step instructions and beautiful photography, will have you itching to get stitching. Working with a wide variety of fabrics, there are adorable fleece and felt baby booties finished with French knots to make, or use classic gingham or stripes to put together an apron, coat hanger cover and laundry bag. Also included in this title are ideas for projects using recycled materials, plus ways to use up the scraps in your sewing box. A range of techniques are explored as well, including applique for a cushion cover, cross-stitched bed linen, patchwork for a quilt, embroidery on Christmas decorations and more. Simplicity is always at the heart of Clare's designs, and the clear instructions and step-by-step artworks mean anyone can have a go, and will be surprised how quickly beautiful pieces can be made. There's also a how-to section that explains any stitch, knot and join you might need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linen and herrings and reindeer, oh my! October 6, 2010
By Astrid
Format:Paperback
Highly, highly recommended. The projects are beautiful, and I can honestly say I want to make most of them... starting with the fleece baby boots, and working onto the stuffed reindeer, the herring table runner, the felt Christmas ornaments, and the folky bird cushion. The horse wall hanging was a little less my taste, but the techniques used on there will translate nicely to customising some of the other projects. I also really appreciated the author's tips on how to make do with craft-store felt if you can't find the fancy wool felt. This book will make you want to fill your house with felt and linen, and is probably a wonderful thing to get yourself just before the holidays if you like to give handmade gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Needlecraft June 25, 2010
Format:Paperback
I LOVE this book.
I LOVE the pictures.
I LOVE the projects.
I made the first embroidered bag.
Modestly challenging but really good directions.
I had to double my felt because I couldn't find felt thick enough but it worked out well because the second layer covers the back of the embroidery.
LOVED the finished project.
I can't wait to work on more!
