5.0 out of 5 stars Linen and herrings and reindeer, oh my!
Highly, highly recommended. The projects are beautiful, and I can honestly say I want to make most of them... starting with the fleece baby boots, and working onto the stuffed reindeer, the herring table runner, the felt Christmas ornaments, and the folky bird cushion. The horse wall hanging was a little less my taste, but the techniques used on there will translate...

I wish this book had the Look Inside feature by amazon; I would have had a better idea what to expect rather than what I expected based on reading reviews. The projects are a little too folk-art for my taste, and many are not useful for me (the hanger cover, wall hanging, shelf trim, laundry bag, the totes not on the cover, a sweater collar, and a log carrier that...

Highly, highly recommended. The projects are beautiful, and I can honestly say I want to make most of them... starting with the fleece baby boots, and working onto the stuffed reindeer, the herring table runner, the felt Christmas ornaments, and the folky bird cushion. The horse wall hanging was a little less my taste, but the techniques used on there will translate nicely to customising some of the other projects. I also really appreciated the author's tips on how to make do with craft-store felt if you can't find the fancy wool felt. This book will make you want to fill your house with felt and linen, and is probably a wonderful thing to get yourself just before the holidays if you like to give handmade gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Needlecraft, June 25, 2010
This review is from: Scandinavian Needlecraft: 35 Step-by-step Projects to Create the Scandinavian Home (Paperback)
I LOVE this book.
I LOVE the pictures.
I LOVE the projects.
I made the first embroidered bag.
Modestly challenging but really good directions.
I had to double my felt because I couldn't find felt thick enough but it worked out well because the second layer covers the back of the embroidery.
LOVED the finished project.
I can't wait to work on more!

I am new at working with felt and recycling felt into new items! I saw this book and new that it would have the inspiration and instructions for me to create an infinite array of items! And it has met every expectation and then some! I love it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very original, December 17, 2010

This review is from: Scandinavian Needlecraft: 35 Step-by-step Projects to Create the Scandinavian Home (Paperback)
I wish this book had the Look Inside feature by amazon; I would have had a better idea what to expect rather than what I expected based on reading reviews. The projects are a little too folk-art for my taste, and many are not useful for me (the hanger cover, wall hanging, shelf trim, laundry bag, the totes not on the cover, a sweater collar, and a log carrier that doesn't really carry logs... ). The stitching, while attractive, is really similar to what can be found in many other sources including free on the internet. The stitching is moderately complicated and the directions are so-so (if you don't have prior stitching experience, you probably will be very challenged). All the patterns need to be enlarged (including the stitching guides); many of them also have free versions on the internet. The directions for felt and re-using materials are also readily available from free sources. It is a very attractive book, a nice packaging of mostly un-original ideas. If that appeals to you, buy it. I returned my copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love This Book!, December 21, 2010

This review is from: Scandinavian Needlecraft: 35 Step-by-step Projects to Create the Scandinavian Home (Paperback)
I really love this book but have one teensy complaint which is why I only gave it 4 stars...I am having a lot of difficulty resizing the first bag and the adult slippers. My printer is very basic and won't cooperate! I then took the book to a Printer and they wouldn't let me resize due to copyright laws. Tried printing on one of their self-serve printers and could not find instruction manual. GRRRR!!! So today I downloaded a program from the internet that will let me resize. Keeping my fingers crossed! Anyone else having this issue?
Other than that, there are many wonderful projects and the instructions for the sewing and embroidery are very clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Simplicity, April 14, 2010
This review is from: Scandinavian Needlecraft: 35 Step-by-step Projects to Create the Scandinavian Home (Paperback)
I cannot wait to buy this book. It is beautiful and all the stitches appear to be uncomplicated. Basic embroidery stitches put together in coordinating colors create items that give a look much more complex than they are. I am actually purchasing this for my 9yr old because I think the patterns are something even a child can do, while adults will enjoy the history and the intricacy of the patterns.

The items are fun and pretty--pillows, a bag, even a Dala horse that could be used as an ornament. Most of the items are small to medium size (ie: no wall hangings, etc) as seen in most craft books these days.

If you are a fan of Jan Brett's Christmas books you will like this book even more.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE!, January 5, 2012

I LOVE this book. I MUST make just about every project in it (minus the collar, the log carrier...). I agree that it probably isn't a book for beginning embroiderers but it doesn't claim to be for beginners anyway. The colors are so wonderful and soothing and I am realizing these are the colors I want in my house! Here in Texas, we dream of cool winters and slate colored skies... Off to stitch!

I only saw one thing in this book that I thought I would definitely like to do, but I took a chance and ordered it hoping there would be more. I was delighted! I loved looking at ALL the really cute projects. The patterns are full size which couldn't be better. Can't wait to get started.
