My son and I took turns reading this book aloud. I had a hard time passing it back to him...I just couldn't stop reading! Great suspense and mystery. Find our what happens when two children spend summer vacation on their grandparent's farm. I'll bet Mark and Jodi can't wait to return home and back to school. Just when you think the farm is back to normal ...well, I'm...

The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight by R.L. Stine

Jodie can already imagine the stories her grandpa will be telling around the fireplace at night. She can also taste her grandma's chocolate chip pancakes. Guess again! When Jodie and her brother Mark get there, they realize that their grandparents are out-of-shape. Then one night, Jodie sees the twelve new scarecrows trying to get off their stakes! Will people believe her? If you're hoping to be a farmer, read this book.

This book was okay. I chose this book because it looked the really scary. I also picked this book because I like the Goosebumps series.

I think R.L. Stine tried to show how people can cooperate. Or, he wanted to show us how much responsibility you need on a farm.

THEY'RE ALIVE!

Jodie loves coming to her grandparent's farm, but something has changed. In the wide open space of their farm, the normal scarecrows have been replaced with evil looking
scarecrows. One night Jodie sees something weird. The scarecrows are moving, twitching on their sticks. She decides something is wrong. Throughout the book she has many fears. When Jodie gets curious about things she cant explain, Jodie try's to figure it out and something always goes wrong. The things she does with other characters including her grandpa and grandma can be deadly. This book The Field Of Screams by R.L. Stine is exciting and filled with suspense. There is also a whole series of GooseBumps with the same amount of suspense. I would recommend this book to someone who can handle scary situations. BEWARE YOU'RE IN FOR A SCARE.

4.0 out of 5 stars This story is full of scarecrows., April 8, 2005
A Kid's Review
Do you see any scarecrows "coming alive"? Goosebumps- The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight is mostly about scarecrows. R.L Stine is an author of over two dozen best selling thrillers and mysteries for young people. He also wrote these books- The Dead Girlfriend, Don't Go To Sleep, and Go Eat Worms. He always tries to write scary and mysteries books. This story happened on Mark's Grandpas farm. I think that R.L Stine is trying to say that, you don't need to be scared.
The scarecrows are walking in the fields- I think that is not true because the scarecrows can't walk and in real life the scarecrows are not real. The story is about scarecrows trying to scare Mark and Mark never gives into his fear. Would you like to be the leader of scarecrows? I really recommend this book to those who like scarecrows and scary books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Took a bit..., October 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It is a great book, one of R.L. Stine's best... but it took forever to get here. I'll still give it four stars, however, because it came in the condition promised, at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars evil scarecrows, March 10, 2010
Jodie loves visiting her grandparents on their farm. Her grandfather tells great scary stories and her grandmother makes the world's best pan cakes.
But this summer something is off. The corn is growing poorly, her grandparents look weary and the old scare crow is gone. In its place are 12 new ones that look evil. The farmhand, retarded Stanley, makes weird comments, such as "The scare crow walks at midnight". Surely he's joking?

Great story, I liked it a lot. Being stuck there on the farm, with everyone you know changed and weird, and then discover something that scary. Well done!

3.0 out of 5 stars Is Sticks trying to scare Jodie and Mark?, February 14, 2010
Synopsis: The book starts off with Jodie and her brother Mark, meeting Stanley at the train station. Stanley is the hired man on their grandparent's farm. Jodie and Mark visit their Grandpa Kurt and Grandma Miriam every summer each year. As Stanley drives the children to their grandparent's house, he tells Jodie that "the scarecrow walks at midnight".

When they reach the farmhouse, Jodie and Mark are happy to see their grandparents, but they notice them acting differently. Both of them seem more tired, slower, and quieter. Grandpa Kurt used to tell them a lot of jokes and scary stories, but hardly says anything to them these days. Grandma Miriam used to cook their favorite pancakes, but doesn't do it anymore and simply tells them that `pancakes are too fattening'.

Jodie also notices a lot of scarecrows on the field, which Stanley says he built himself. Stanley tells them about his superstition book and how it showed him to build the scarecrows. Jodie gets scared when a scarecrow arm reaches for her throat, but gets angry when she realizes that it is only Sticks, Stanley's son. Sticks loves to scare Jodie and Mark and calls them `city kids'. Sticks secretly tells Jodie that `things are different here'.

Late at night, before Jodie goes to bed, she looks outside the window and is shocked to see the scarecrows start to twitch. She calls Mark, but he tells her that it was probably just the wind. Later, when Jodie and Mark go fishing, Jodie hears footsteps and sees a scarecrow poke its head out from the shade of two tall pine trees. Afterward, when she sees someone moving inside the barn, Jodie decides to check it out, and someone shuts and locks her inside the barn. Jodie hides inside the barn and sees a scarecrow inside, trying to find her.

Jodie and Mark decide that Sticks is trying to play a trick and scare them by dressing as a scarecrow. They decide to get even and play a trick on the scarecrow. Little do they realize that there is more to the scarecrows than they think, and the horror is now after Jodie and Mark. Can they escape from the Scarecrows?

Review: I thought the premise of the story was very interesting. A scarecrow suddenly comes to life and wreaks havoc in the farm.

However, the main reason why I was disappointed with this story was because it had too many unexplained incidents in it, particularly relating to Stanley. For instance, how did Stanley get possession of the book in the first place? After working so long with Jodie and Mark's Grandparents, why didn't Grandpa Kurt or Grandma Miriam get the book from Stanley somehow, considering that he is `slow'. I mean, if they knew the book was dangerous, why did they allow Stanley to read it under their noses in their own home, while feeding him? Even Sticks, who knew the truth, didn't do anything to get the book.

If Stine had given more explanation about the history of the book, and how Stanley get a hold of it, along with a reason as to why everyone was so afraid of Stanley and not doing anything, I would have enjoyed this book even more. Other than that, this book was fun to read, and had its moments, like when Jodie is trapped inside the barn with someone following her, or when she dreams that Grandpa Kurt and Grandma Miriam are scarecrows coming after her.

Overall, I liked reading this book but didn't think it was really that amazing as compared to some others in the series due to the reasons mentioned above.
