Comparisons are always unfair. That said, Jonathan Pointer's first album runneth over with songs that Tom Waits and Randy Newman would have been very proud to have written. Folk, country, blues and ballads - Pointer jumps the genres in a fascinating fashion, binding it all together with a smoky voice, superb story-telling and a rare sense of melody. Combine all of this with delicate instrumentation (e.g. mandolin, harmonica, violin, viola, accordian and hammond b-3 organ) and crisp production (Jud Dean and Pointer himself). What comes out is either completely timeless or from an entirely different age and time - or so it sounds. A remarkable musical achievement and one of the very best debut albums I can think of. And, you know what? - His 2001 follow-up "Love songs from the outskirts of bliss" will wipe you off your feet, too. Among contemporary music's best kept secrets Jonathan Pointer ranks sky-high. Won't someone give this guy worldwide distribution, please!?

Johnathan Pointer is a breath of fresh air. These are short stories from a quirky perspective. Low, gravel voice is perfect for this setting. I have really enjoyed this CD over the years and look forward to hearing the new one.

As the co-producer (with Jonathan) of "Scarecrows Burn," I am surely a bit biased in providing a review of the album. That said, I believe J.P. is one of the most talented, undiscovered, folk songwriters in the country, and a musical genius to boot. In songs like the title track, the Psalms of Owen Tabor, Yard Sale, and Ascension Day, beautiful and often haunting stories artfully and poetically unfold before your ears, the lyrics and the melodies merging seamlessly to form the kind of song that you can't imagine anyone ever actually sat down and wrote - it must have always existed. Next time you're in the mood for a moving short story, buy this album and sit down and let Jonathan read his short stories to you. And keep an eye out for his recently released newest album, also a gem!
