A truly remarkable, must-have 6 ½ hour, 5 cd box set w/ 134 British indie-pop artists from the 80's. Comes in a 5 ½" x 7 ½" box that looks & opens like a hardcover book w/a 56 page non-removable booklet(unfortunate, since you have to read the booklet w/the discs attached to the front & back covers), w/ info about each band/ track. Cut & paste the title into Wikipedia for a full list of the artists/ songs. The cds are a real pain to remove initially, but once done, it's quite easy (see Mistere's review). Since disc 1 is the hardest disc to get out, I suggest starting w/1 of the 2 discs on the back cover to get the hang of it. Sound is overall excellent and recorded at a very even level (for those of you who like to make your own playlists). I am reasonable well versed in older music, yet I've only heard of maybe 35% of these bands, and I recognize very few of the songs. Lots of influences heard, from The Smiths & Echo & Bunnymen to ska to jangle-pop, sunshine-pop & power-pop, w/even a bit of garage rock. This is a very pricy set, so watch for outside Amazon vender posts; I picked up a new copy for less than half of list.

Even the ones that aren't so amazing, particularly the more oddball (I guess "post-punk" would be a good term) songs are great period pieces. But most of the tunes ARE seriously choice. There was less nostalgia here than I'd thought, having been born in 1966 and into alternative as a college student. I guess that was cos I'm an American. But the lack of nostalgia was a good thing. If they had just had the same old James and Smiths I knew and loved, I'd have been a lot more bored. It was the stuff I hadn't known that made this comp what it was for me.

Many, many bands and some good tunes with a biography for each band. My only complaint, which I should have known, is a lot of the songs sound like the The Smiths, who are my least favorite band on the planet.

Jon at Cherry Red Records unlocked the video (for me at least), but I found it misleading; however, it got me started on the right track. The CDs are held in place by two tabs on the upper half, and locked in place by a pair of plastic "springs" on the lower half. This is what worked for me: Use your index fingers to push down on the top of the first CD and compress the springs. Still using your index fingers, rotate the CD slightly to move it from underneath either of the top tabs. You can then work the CD out from under the other tab and lift it out of the box. The CDs must be taken out in order, starting with the one on top. Now that I am now able to get the CDs out of the box, I'll update this review when I finish listening to the music.
