2.0 out of 5 stars Only for the "beginner" dog owner
I have had dogs for years, and this book doesn't cover anything I didn't already know. I'm not an expert, but everything in the book was pretty basic. It is a good book for a person who is just a dog owner for the first time. It has lots of little tid bits, but no meat and potatoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holistic vets want you to read this book!!, March 25, 2006
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
As a holistic veterinarian, I wish all my clients would read this book! Writing from her earnest, unique, canine point of view, Chiclet-a peppery 4-lb. Maltese-imparts crucial information in a fun, easy-to-read style. She and her human companion, Jan Rasmusen, have done an incredible job researching and distilling information that every dog guardian should know.

Chiclet (and Jan) decided to get writing after Chiclet's true love, Jiggy, developed severe immune-mediated liver disease. His long journey back to health (mainly through a homemade diet) triggered the extensive research that resulted in this book. Their website provides dozens of links and complete support for the book.

This book aims to explode every common myth and cover virtually every aspect of canine care; all in an entertaining and painless fashion. The importance of regular check-ups, spaying and neutering, dental care, home and travel safety, and pest control are emphasized. Behavior, housing, surgery, adoption, rehoming, and even death get the same even-pawed, thoughtful treatment. I was particularly glad to see a discussion about providing for your pet if you die first.

Though Chiclet clearly thinks holistically, there's not too much here that any vet should argue with - though conventional thinkers may be uncomfortable with the way Chiclet's sharp teeth (and wit) dissect the medical, pharmaceutical, and pet food industries, and raw diets still aren't widely accepted. (It doesn't hurt that I agree with almost everything Chiclet says, but I must say, her logic is flawless!)

I sat down one snowy morning to glance at this book, preparing to muddle through it at some future date. Instead, I was utterly hooked within a few sentences, and finished the entire book in a day. I have rarely been so impressed by any publication! Chiclet's chatty style provides massive amounts of information in a format that will convince people that they are just having a fun read, when they are really getting an intensive education in dog. She does bare her teeth when needed to get her point across; and there is much that is currently wrong with how most people deal with their dogs that needs correcting!

The 90 incredible photos alone are worth the price of admission, but this is much, much more than a cute picture book. If you want one book that will get you clued in to the holistic philosophy in a thorough but gentle and even enjoyable way, this is definitely the one. I'd recommend this one to everyone with a dog. Holistic vets should buy it by the case and distribute it to new clients. (Royalties go to worthy critter causes!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide, October 2, 2006
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care by Chiclet T. Dog and Jan Rasmusen is a cleverly written manual/guide to rethinking canine health and safety. Written in Chiclet's own voice, he tells how all the things we do to our beloved pets feel from the dog's perspective. The wording is enjoyable to read and packed with valuable information on every aspect of dog care from buying or adopting your new pet to bathing, vacinating, training and many more aspects. Even if you have belonged to a dear dog for many years you will learn a lot from this terrific book. Of course, you can spend as much money on your pet nowadays as on a human because pet surgery and hospitals have become so advanced and sophistocated, so maybe you can email Chiclet about pet health insurance here too (even though millions of American people don't have any!). In Chiclet's Trivia Treat he does comment on doggy face lift surgery for winning pet shows! The book is well indexed and the chapters have subject categorized in the margins of each chapter, so you can find emergency information quickly. This book, awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award of excellence, is a must have for dog owners, and a delightful read too.

5.0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC! A must-have book, especially for new dog owners., January 12, 2006
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
I just got a puppy, and even though I bought what I thought was the best puppy food on the market, he developed some digestive problems. They got so bad he was dehydrating. Then someone turned me on to Jan Rasmusen's book, SCARED POOPLESS, and I read what she said about feeding our dogs. After reading up on all of the "human" foods we can give our dogs, I began by changing Bailey's food and introducing a bit of the approved human foods she mentioned. Within just a few hours, Bailey's problems had begun to subside, and having changed his diet for the last few days, getting him off of the dog food, has had amazingly wonderful results.

Just to be sure, I still took my puppy to the vet. The vet absolutely agreed with the dietary changes I had made for the pup, and thankfully, Bailey is now doing fine. Scared Poopless has become our reference guide for the care and feeding of our new family member. It's a must-have reference, especially for NEW dog owners. Don't know what we'd do without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scared Poopless taught me how to really love my dogs!, November 27, 2005
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
I am a 14 year old male who owns three dogs....whoa...I am getting ahead of myself. I really think that I am pretty smart, one of those teenagers who some people might call a "know-it-all," especially when it comes to taking care of my dogs. However, now that I have read SCARED POOPLESS by Chiclet T. Dog, I can admit that my ego was far too much involved in taking care of my dogs. I took care of them in ways that were easy and fun for me. I didn't know that I was killing them with sawdust dog foods, over vaccinations, jet ski rides on Mission Bay, and so forth! After reading SCARED POOPLESS, my heart became involved in taking care of my dogs. Chiclet, the author, is very audacious-she speaks the truth for dogs on so many dog issues that I actually took notes on some of the chapters.(So much for being a "know-it-all!") Her eyes speak to my heart, as well as her humor, intelligence, and I would be a fool to mess with her sassy attitude. Chiclet T. Dog, you rock! Thank you for all the great dog pictures in your book. Thank you for sharing all of your information with me. SCARED POOPLESS has brought many changes into the lives of my three dogs. The best two changes are that they are safer and act much happier when they see me. (Do you think it might have to do with with eating veggies and real meat eat instead of dog sawdust?) I know that they now know that I do love them very much. I recommend this book to Hillary Duff, Paris Hilton and all other wonderful dog lovers in the world. Chiclet, thank you once more. P.S. Don't forget that the a lot of the proceeds of SCARED POOPLESS go directly toward dog causes. What better way to spend some money than helping helpless dogs! Your friend, Gabriel Ryan in San Diego, Ca.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Irristable, Funny, Thought-provoking & Educational, November 17, 2005
By
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
First of all - the photos! Amazing, expressive, adorable, and varied which can't help but touch all dog owners (actually, any animal lovers)! The photos pulled me in! I myself am a Maltese owner of two -- I had to look throughout the book at all the human-like actions of the dogs! I just couldn't resist; then I had to read something about each topic from first page to last. Not being able to stop at just perusing the chapters, I couldn't resist then getting into the meat of the obvious extended research that went into the facts expressed. It all makes so much sense. Chiclet writes with humor, honesty, research, and new-health education -- all in an human-interest manner which makes the learning easier and presents a new form of health patterns which will change the way people think and how animals thrive! A simply delightful book that I have already recommended to my friends! It has a place on my coffee table.
Thank you, authors - you did a lickingly delicious job with this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars your pets can live longer healthier lives for less money and be happier, May 9, 2007
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)

I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great, fun and fantastically informative READ!!!!, December 17, 2005
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)

What can I say about Scared Poopless?  I love it! I literally have a wall full of dog books since I am totally immersed in the dog world. I am in shows and train constantly for conformation, obedience, rally, and agility. I'm also an RN as well as having a background working in veterinary hospitals.  I thought I knew a great deal about cutting edge dog care but boy did I learn A LOT reading this book! I am truly thrilled with how well researched, fun and full of extraordinary information it is and I can't remember when I have loved a new dog book as much as I have this one!

I was floored by the extremely beautiful color pictures and best of all it is written from the perspective of the writer's dog "Chiclet." This dear little dog captured my heart with her wise words, incredible comedic sensibility and I give kudos to the human author for using such a novel approach in this "must have" dog care book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the gift for all my dogloving friends., November 16, 2005
This review is from: Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care (Paperback)
This book may save your dog's life. I was given a copy, read it in 2 days, and have purchased it for Christmas presents for all my dog-loving friends.

Comprehensive information on dogs meds, foods, training, plus information I haven't found anyplace else.

Throw away your other books and "amaze your friends" with your knowledge.

The dog, Chiclet, is one smart dog. AND she knows what she's talking about.

Thoroughly researched and documented - the book you need to add years onto your dog's life.

I have a large German Shepherd and it is every bit as relevant for him as for a small dog.

Can't say enough good things about the book and its authors.
