Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—A fun and insightful look at 50 phobias, some common like ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) and others unusual such as koumpounophobia (fear of buttons). Latta describes the biology of fear and explains that while some are beneficial for survival, they can become phobias if they are so severe as to interfere with everyday life. The phobias are arranged alphabetically and include explanations of the origins of their names and how the fears may have developed. Famous people who have suffered from them (Lincoln feared dentists), interesting sidebars ("scare quotes"), and pop-culture references make the volume accessible and appealing to a wide audience. Simple, abstract illustrations keep the pages from being cluttered. The easy-to-use index allows quick access to specific phobias, though most will want to read the book cover to cover. The author's lively style will certainly hold readers' attention. For those wanting to delve more deeply into the subject, the appendix provides print and web resources.—Sherry J. Mills, Hazelwood East High School, St. Louis, MO

From Booklist

Relying heavily on up-to-date research and contributions from clinical psychologists, Latta seeks to explain and demystify phobias and anxieties. Many of the 50 phobias included are familiar, such as arachnophobia and claustrophobia, but more obscure fears are also mentioned, such as pogonophobia (fear of beards), somniphobia (fear of sleep), and pediophobia (fear of dolls). Using a conversational tone and plenty of quotes from individuals with firsthand experience of specific fears, each phobia is explored in biological and historical context before possible triggers are detailed. Basic neurological causes for fear are explained in plain terms, and one broad chapter is devoted to social anxieties including agoraphobia. A heavy emphasis is placed on the potential for exposure therapy and cognitive behavior therapy to lessen or eliminate the effects of phobias. In each chapter, famous people who share individual fears are mentioned. Imparting the ideas that phobic people are in good company and that hope exists for eliminating persistent fears, this is factual, fun, and encouraging. Grades 5-8. --Erin Anderson

Sara Latta does an excellent explaining the fifty phobias she looks at in this entertaining and informative paperback. What's more the sidebars she includes contain fun and offbeat material that relate to the phobia being discussed. For example, did you know that Johnny Depp has a deep fear of clowns? Also, because he hated creepy crawlies, Humphrey Bogart demanded they use rubber leeches in the famous "leech scene" in the classic film "The African Queen".

This illustrated book is designed for readers 12 years of age and older but adults will love it too. Here's a good way to learn about some common and not so common phobias.

This book was a pretty fun read. A little quirky at times, but definitely something you'd want to keep around, just to have. Looks pretty good on a bookshelf as well.

It had some pretty good background information on some phobia's or at least fun story's (And by fun I mean horrifying.)

The most obvious connection in the books I read about fear started with Scared Stiff: Everything You Need To Know About 50 Famous Phobias. I will admit I was not interested in this book at first. As I started to read I found myself quite fascinated. The book discusses phobias and fear, reasons why the exists, and 50 examples. What I like the about the book was that it was a fun read. Short concise chapters about each fear with a good description, very interesting facts and tidbits, and coping mechanisms to deal with our fears. I am sharing this with my son. I never gave much thought to seriousness of phobias until I read about them in a book. Did you know Abe Lincoln had a huge fear of dentists? Why not find out more about phobias and learn a few things along the way.

This book puts the "Phun" in Phobias! I have a few phobias, so I am always looking to find a cure. The one cure I don't want is desensitization, but that seems to be the most common and most effective answer.

The author has an engaging sense of humor, making a heavy subject light and fun. There are examples where phobias have been written about in books and plays. There are movie choices (if you're brave enough to watch them!). There are examples of famous people and their phobias. There are also resources on how to manage or lose a phobia, and places to get more information.

This book is a fast read and makes a great reference book.
