Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The need to plug in a new TV forces the squirrel with OCD tendencies into yet another outing. First, though, supplies must be gathered—from rubber boots and bug netting to a very long extension cord. And because “planning is everything!” every conceivable hazard is charted (“Keep a nose out for skunks. If sprayed, overreact!”), a time line and a checklist of weather conditions compiled, and the adjacent campground carefully mapped. Alas, still one can’t think of everything. A sudden encounter with a penguin results in a wild scramble that ultimately leads the redoubtable rodent to a new appreciation for the pleasures of camping under the stars. Scaredy Squirrel’s meticulous preparations are, once again, captured in squared off, neatly arranged, carefully labeled cartoon illustrations, and his experiences may blaze a trail for readers with a similar aversion to venturing outdoors. Grades 1-3. --John Peters

The storyline is something that children can easily relate to.

I read this book to my kindergarten students at the end of the year, but also had 4th graders love it during summer school.

While the format is the same, the illustrations and silliness make the books fun to read.

(I received an ARC from NetGalley to review.)

I work at an elementary school library and discovered Scaredy Squirrel, much to the students' delight. Scaredy Squirrel Goes Camping is the latest installment and is guaranteed to make you smile.

Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of everything outside his tree: beaches, birthday parties, camping, etc. I think children enjoy him because they can relate, but author Melanie Watt ramps up the silliness factor so children can laugh in the face of fear. (And who wouldn't chuckle when they see Scaredy Squirrel's big face grinning from the pages?)

While the format is the same, the illustrations and silliness make the books fun to read. In Camping, Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of the big outdoors, which includes penguins. (?!) He prefers to watch it on his TV, but needs to plug in his extension cord at a local campground. He think about what scares him, plans how to deal with those fears, dons his protective gear and bravely heads out into "the wild". Of course, something happens to derail his plans and he panics. But curiosity gets the better of him and he learns to push past those fears and enjoy life.

(My one issue/non-issue is when Scaredy Squirrel first panics, he "plays dead" to avoid trouble. I read stories aloud to K-3rd graders and was worried about how the K-1st graders would interpret that word so I changed it to "sleep". It wouldn't be an issue with my own child, but not sure with other children.)

I love how Scaredy Squirrel acknowledges what scares him and tries to overcome those fears. It's a good lesson for everyone.

I'm definitely adding this one to our library collection.

As a mother of a son diagnosed with OCD, I have really come to appreciate these books. Not only are they entertaining for adults, they are a wonderful tool to help my son understand that some fears are just irrational, and we have to look at our fears understand why they are, so we are better able to take on those fears. He also learns that things do not always go the way we plan, and that is ok because people are able to.

Of course, my son just loves the books because Scaredy is really cute, and he makes him laugh. This new book does not disappoint with the same ridiculous antics and plans of all of the other Scaredy Squirrel books.

The Scaredy Squirrel series is so complex and yet can be done so simply in reading. They're great for multiple levels of literacy development (ex: identifying/understanding literary structures like lists TO very higher level language comprehension with inferences and lots of social language opportunities). Highly recommend. So clever and entertaining for adults and children. Great medium for talking about anxiety and the appropriate sizes of one's reactions too!

I love Scaredy Squirrel books. Not only is there good meaning for kids in the books, but there is a lot of adult humor in it as well. I read this book to my kindergarten students at the end of the year, but also had 4th graders love it during summer school.

This book was recommended by a friend. The whole series is great. My daughter likes the concepts and enjoys problem solving with Scaredy Squirrel. If your child is on the cusp of learning to read then this is a great book to brainstorm lists for things: camping, going to the beach, park etc. Together you brainstorm your own lists and start to write them down. This helps to personalize thier own reading experience with sounding out the words. Won't be perfect since the English language has so many rules.
