Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Boo! Halloween, with its haunted houses and bloody fangs, is cause for serious alarm when you’re a nervous squirrel. In this latest in a series of safety guides, which includes Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Christmas (2012), Scaredy Squirrel has assembled a hodgepodge of zany safety tips for getting through October 31 unscathed. There are eight chapters in all; in the chapter dealing with costumes, Scaredy Squirrel models six ensembles, each paired with a scare-o-meter evaluating its fright factor (all but one is deemed “terrifying,” even though the squirrel couldn’t look cuter). Other topics, from carving a pumpkin to planning a bash, receive equally silly treatment. Illustrated in comic book–panel style, this is a jam-packed, fun guide to a highly anticipated holiday (for most, anyways). Grades 1-3. --Ann Kelley

Go figure, Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of Halloween! He is okay with the not scary aspects of it, as long as there are no abandoned houses or monsters. This safety guide will help kids plan a party, pick a costume, and prepare their trick-or-treat route. With real suggestions like using an old television set on a static channel or costume tips of layering your clothes in case of temperature changes, kids will find this book useful AND funny. Parents will laugh along with such witty ideas as "Draw face on photogenic side of pumpkin."

I always look for good read aloud books for story time. This is definitely not that kind of book. There is too much going on and not so much of a story. Does that mean I don't like this book? Absolutely not. It is the perfect picture book for older kids to explore. The older they are, the more humor they will likely find. My favorite part of this Scaredy Squirrel book is the fact that there are chapters. Kids love feeling like they are doing things that older kids do, such as reading chapter books. It also makes for a longer book, a general progression as they get older. From the familiar, adorable pictures and witty humor, to the actually helpful Halloween tips for kids, we end up with a perfectly not-so-scary Halloween book. Like it says at the end, "Happy non-threatening Halloween everyone!"

This book was provided to me free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Finish Time: 25 minutes. We’re trying something new today. As my daughter is weaning from her naps, she is more and more interested in just what exactly I am doing on my computer (and none of her toys!). As I was browsing titles on NetGalley today (a new free book service I’ve recently discovered), I found a whole Children’s Books section, and figured that my 3 (almost 4) year old can help me review a book or two. So let’s see how this goes!

A little longer than I initially expected – 8 chapters!! While intimidating at first, and not having an actual book to hold and know how long we were expecting, at just a few pages to each chapter, and mainly pictures, not that bad. Definitely intended for a little older age range (although Amazon does suggest 4-8 years old), or maybe a few more Halloweens under our belts could have been beneficial! I like the character of Scaredy Squirrel, he’s a planner like me, so this is right up my alley!. And I’d be open to reading more of his adventures as it looks like he has many. The pictures were the best part. Even if the words were too high level for my daughter, the pictures opened up dialogue and made the book interactive for us, especially liked all the costumes. The quiz at the beginning is good too for interaction. Our favorite pictures were princess squirrel and all the doggies dressed up towards the end!

My daughter's thoughts included that the cover had a silly squirrel with triangle teeth (vampire squirrel!) And liked that whenever we read the word “squirrel” that all 3 of our dogs ran outside hunting for said squirrel.

Our loveable, neurotic little worrywart, Scaredy Squirrel is back with another winning book for your reading pleasure. It is a Safety Guide to Halloween. It is an event planner that will make your Halloween the best and least surprising ever. Following his carefully, thought - out safety tips, you will experience a safe and harmless night of trick-or-treating and party celebration.

The author has divided the book into short chapters (8 in all) and has covered everything from decorating your home, choosing your costumes and even eating the type of candy you might receive on that frightful night. Some of the over-the-top advice he dispenses is: always carve a pumpkin with a friendly look on its face, if you want a great costume - start shopping for one in early June, and of course the best one for me was ..... chocolate Halloween candy is very good but it does melt and attract bunnies. Scaredy Squirrel also suggests that you turn on your blender to scare off the ghosts and goblins, avoid any untamed lawns you may encounter and turn on your washing machine for the sound effects. The good news about the washing machine is that you can do a load of laundry at the same time as you are using it for scare tactics for things that go bump in the night.

Scaredy Squirrel is a a favourite story character with OCD tendencies that everyone will surely love. Kids of all ages will get a laugh from his overcompensations that come to naught. He documents in vivid detail how to have a safe and accident-free Halloween night. Perfect read aloud that will generate lots of smiles and laughter. The illustrations are hilarious making Scaredy even more endearing to the reader. Check out: www. scraredysquirrel.com for a more info on both book and author.
