Editorial Reviews

Onyx presents a Scarlatti recital with a twist. Joseph Moog has assembled a fascinating survey of Scarlatti Sonatas that also includes a selection of the 18th-century master's works as re-composed by some of the giants of the piano keyboard from the 19th and 20th centuries. The drama contained in Scarlatti's short, one-movement sonatas has always exerted a hold over both musicians and listeners. The development of the piano in the 19th century provided too great a temptation for composer pianist Carl Tausig, a rival of Chopin and star pupil of Liszt, to ignore these works. He, along with Ignaz Friedman exploited the drama and poetry in Scarlatti's music, using the new grand piano to its full extent. Walter Gieseking's Chaconne, a fantastical composition on a theme by Scarlatti, forms the centerpiece of Moog s unique and fascinating recital.

This disc contains some of the most phenomenal finger dexterity ever recorded, and I remind my readers that I worked closely with such technical wizards as Jorge Bolet, Earl Wild, and Rian de Waal; thus I do not make such a statement lightly. Joseph Moog's technique is an art unto itself, and when combined with his musicianship, the results are astounding.

We must remember that Scarlatti himself referred to the first publication of his works as Exercises. The appellation "Sonata" came later. Scarlatti was a true virtuoso of the keyboard, and these works are the product of a man who reveled in his ability and who enjoyed demonstrating to the world just how great was his technique. No one can deny that the brilliance of most of these pieces was designed to dazzle audiences.

There have been many fine recordings of most of the original Sonatas. So it is the offering of transcriptions that makes this disc a "must-have."

The Tausig Pastorale is the least rare of the transcriptions on this disc.

The performance & engineering of this recording are elegant, revealing, & revelatory. Mr. Moog's pianism is superlative, adding a grace to Scarlatti's sonatas which makes them even more delightful than the usual somewhat dry approach. To us, Scarlatti was a composer of unique gifts, and this performance is "illuminating"!!!!!! The addition of other composers' versions of Scarlatti's work is to us superfluous. This is in our opinion a must-have for any fine music collection.

very nice playing but the money's in the content. The "adaptations" are just marvelous, and most of all the metamorphosis by Gieseking, which I can't find published anywhere. Nice Scarlatti but not quite in the Haskil or Meyers class. Still, definitely a keeper. Smart young man to be interested enough in these byways to seek this out, he seems to be well mentored.

We listen to Scarlatti Illuminated regularly...even our baby boy loves this! I plan to get another of these for my father too. Joseph Moogs technique is wonderfully expressive! His passion carries through in this recording and it feels good to hear this music...not only with my ears, but with my emotions and my heart!
