A Classic of Black Metal, May 30, 2011
This review is from: Scarlet Evil Witching Black (Audio CD)
The Greek Black Metal scene has almost always produced a high tier of quality, namely from bands such as Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia. Scarlet Evil Witching Black is no exception; it showcases a much more mature take on song writing than it's predecessor (Crossing the Fiery Path, which is also recommended). The curious thing about Necromantia is their lack of guitar in the music, rather, the sound is filled out with an 8 string bass with distortion, and another 4 string bass with no distortion, as well as percussion and some keys. Don't shirk from this though, the album is still able to convey a wonderful sense of adventure and occult through the medium of bass, which is almost virtuoso in its handling. Make no mistake, this is black metal that teeters on the edge of first and second wave, and has roots in progressive rock of the 70's (King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, etc).
Highly recommended, a record of utmost quality that is essential for any fan of heavy music, goes nicely next to Bathory's Blood Fire Death and Slayer's South of Heaven, though it aesthetically has nothing similar to either album.
Fans of this band would do well to check out Varathron, who is a melting pot of Rotting Christ members and Necromantia.
