Book Description

Ignatius Critical Editions April 30, 2009
A key figure in the development of American literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne was also profoundly influenced by his ancestors and the Christianity that underscored their Puritan heritage. A literary classic, The Scarlet Letter presents a profound meditation on the nature of sin, repentance, and redemption, and on how such Christian concepts may be integrated into American democracy. This edition features an introduction by Aaron Urbanczyk, chair of the literature department at Southern Catholic College, that explores themes in The Custom-House that guide the readers interpretation of the text of the novel, and several critical articles on the works major symbols and Christian themes. Mary R. Reichardt, the editor of this edition, is a professor of literature in the Catholic Studies department at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul MN.

5.0 out of 5 stars simply wonderful edition, September 16, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Scarlet Letter (Ignatius Critical Editions) (Paperback)
The Ignatius Critical Editions are a welcome addition to wasteland of modern higher education. Colleges today are propaganda mills. The profs have an axe to grind and so they PERVERT the classics. Calling it Literary Theory... they push Communism, feminism, homosexuality, etc instead of teaching the freakin' book. (Let us examine these topics in say Moby Dick or Great Expectations or Shakespeare. It is insane. These radical ideas are not there. )

The Ignatius Critical Editions are solidly based on values and tradition. That says it all. Good books presented in a moral way. Steer clear of the OVERPRICED Norton texts and any others not grounded in tradition, values and common sense. Stay away from books pushed by the Liberalcrats.

And please recognize the Ignatius Critical Editions stress critical thinking. Critical thinking is not welcome at the university today. Be a real rebel and think critically. You don't have to regurgitate Prof. I. M. de Best's tripe. Get a real education and debate him.

God bless all of you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not an edition for the open minded., April 28, 2009
This review is from: The Scarlet Letter (Ignatius Critical Editions) (Paperback)
In the most simple terms, this is a biased, moralizing and often misinformed so called critical edition. This is not a critical edition, it is an edition to be critical of and to avoid.

The slant, simply put, is conservative, condescending and condemning. It is not for use by a beginning reader as it will ruin the notion of critical edition for them permanently.

The Norton Critical Edition is the best critical edition for use with all courses regardless of the level of study.

Avoid this series. It has an agenda not a purpose.
