Wonderful read set during the american revolution.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Scarlet Ribbons (Paperback)
French has done an incredible job with this 390 page multifaced book. The Revolution is in full bloom and its hard to tell who is a patriot and who is a Tory and people get killed if they are wrong. Sarah Turner is a young wife with a little boy trying to survive by keeping "kings Landing Inn" open. Sarah's husband, Obediah is a beast who beat her and abused her and forced her into marriage but he is thankfully off fighting the war. His brother Issac, who is even more evil and vile, "checks" on Sarah from time to time waiting to get his hands on her, the inn and her son (and any supplies she may have). Actually Isacc is the leader of a band of renegade cutthroats who kill for the fun of it. In addition to the inn, she ferries people across the river and is desparately in need of physical help when Abe Forrest shows up and saves her from marauders. Despite his straggling red hair, unkempt beard, eyepatch and low born speech, Sarah hires him on. Soon she and her son care about this mountain man. However Forrest is having trouble. He is a Patriot spy sent to spy on this inn and this woman who is a strong loyalist. They survive many bad situations and have to run for their lives, find the bad guys, help win the war, etc....And somehow Sarah has to explain to Forrest that her husband is buried in her yard!!and she is being blackmailed. Very strong characters, hunky guy with or without his eyepatch, incredibly brave woman with a sense of humor, terrific writing ...this is a real treat.I never tire of reading about our nations struggles for liberty.

great Am. Rev. War book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Scarlet Ribbons (Paperback)
Judith E. French does another good job of setting a war torn couple in the Delaware/Eastern Maryland shore area and letting them believably fall in love. Scarlet Ribbons is about a Loyalist heroine, Sarah Turner, who runs an inn to which Patriot spy Forest Irons is sent to discover who is leadingthe men raiding farms and plantations in the area. Both have secrets, neither expected to find love with the other and now they have to decide what to do about it. French gives the story a good period feel and sets it in an underused section of the country during the terrible winter of 1778/79 when Washington and his troops were starving and freezing at Valley Forge. It was vital that supplies be kept moving to the troops and for the Americans to learn who was raiding and stealing those valuable supplies. Forest hates lying to a woman he's beginning to fall in love with but he's determined to do his job. Sarah is terrified for anyone to discover her secret as it could affect not only her life and livelihood but also that of her young son. The divided loyalties which split the country are shown in both the main characters and the secondary ones, and how little those loyalties protected either side becomes clear as the story progresses. The love scenes are well done, without being purple, and better still, well placed. No boinking amidst a pitched battle or any such nonsense. Most of the characters

Another beautiful love story!,

I believe I have read almost every book Judith French has written. Her heroines are always feisty women who aren't afraid to stand toe-to-toe with a man, and I always fall in love with her gorgeous heroes. Her secondary characters are also well-drawn and necessary to the plot; it is easy to fall under Ms. French's spell and believe that these people were real and played a part in the making of the history the U.S. In Scarlet Ribbons, Ms. French offers a multi-layered story that is deftly and seamlessly woven together. Her descriptive talent is amazing; I felt as if I could see, hear, and feel the colonization of America. I highly recommend this book.
