Book Description

Tough...or tender? If she follows her heart, she won't have to choose.

Molly has forever lusted for all three Barksdale brothers, but could never choose. Instead, scandal chose for her, and she married the youngest of the three. Then the brothers go to war, and Molly finds herself a grieving widow when her husband is murdered by a merciless band of Union soldiers.

Hardin Barksdale is hell-bent on avenging his brother. Greer Barksdale is honor-bound to protect his home. They both want Molly-and this time, they're willing to share. The temptation is seductive, the passion sizzling. In harsh, post-war Tennessee, their nightly forbidden trysts wield the power to heal them all-if they can escape the twisted desires of a man bent on seeing all three of them dead.

Molly has been in love with the three brothers for a long time. After she gets caught making out with the youngest, a hasty marriage is necessary, until Witt goes off to war. Her reputation ruined, Molly takes refuge in the family home with her drunken father-in-law and the middle brother, Greer, and the family housekeeper/mammy. The oldest, Hardin, takes off to war as well.

One day Hardin returns, rushing up to Molly and warning her that something dangerous is going to happen and that for Witt's sake, she should be strong and refuse to say anything that could endanger him, no matter what. (The mystery here is what exactly he thinks she knows that she shouldn't tell. Oh well.) Hardin rushes off (after feeling her up a bit and giving her a guilty thrill) and then a Yankee captain appears at the house and demands that Molly appear before him and tell him where her husband is. When she refuses (because she really doesn't know anything), he forces her to strip before his men and endure their lecherous comments about her body and what they would like to do with it. Fortunately, it never comes to anything more than that, but long afterward, Molly is humiliated and shamed, especially after word gets spread around town. Unfortunately, that's the same day Witt is killed in a particularly gruesome fashion. Soon after, word arrives that Hardin has deserted the rebel army, and the family suffers more shame.

During her mourning, Molly finds herself more and more attracted to Greer, and he, having loved her before her marriage to his brother, finds her difficult to resist. Being the consummate gentleman and very conscious of propriety, he tries to avoid her and temptation, determined to wait to offer her marriage until her mourning period is over.

I absolutely adored this book! Ms. Glass is a talented author and her characters....well, let's just say that I so wanted to be the Molly in her book. From rich historical details of the life on Oakleigh during the Civil War to characters who steal your heart, this book is one of my favorite historical books.

Widow Molly Barksdale is a character that you both love and hate. I loved and adored her character because she knew exactly what she wanted and didn't want to do without it. I hated her because of her love for both the remaining Barksdale brothers and not being able to choose between them. She loves them both and it's evident. She lost her husband in the Civil War when seven Yankees viciously murdered him.

Hardin Barksdale is the oldest one of the group and when he learns of his baby brother's death and the torment that Molly went through at the hand of the Meshack January, a Yankee, he sought to avenge them by killing the seven men responsible. He deserts the southern Army and sets out as the ghost. Killing all but January, Hardin returns home and agrees to stay at the request of Molly. He loves her with his soul and wants to please her.

The trouble with that is, so does his little brother Greer. Greer, at the request of Molly, takes the oath and is relieved of any more duty in the Army. Injured in war and nursed back to health by the beautiful widow,he's now thinking of marrying Molly when her time of mourning his baby brother is over. Then Hardin returns and he catches them in bed together. Not wanting to be left out, he goes to her and together, the brothers fulfill all of Molly's dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scarlet Widow November 22, 2011

I read this book over the weekend and enjoyed it immensely. The plot was well thought out and the characters were well developed. I don't know if there is any accuracy to the historical accounts in the book, however real or not they felt real while reading. The book could have been a bit longer to expand on her marriage to Whit, who was killed as a deserter and spy, and of course the ending kind of left you hanging on who she choose to marry which is why I gave it 4 starts. All in all it was a sensual book and the two men who were brothers but totally different in their personalities made it all the more believable. Great job Ms. Glass!

4.0 out of 5 stars How could anyone choose April 19, 2014
By Hellen
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There is no hatred between the brothers and while neither wishes to share her they can't live without her and she can't choose because she loves them both. I found this book intensely erotic and touching, however I wish there had been more backstory. I'd like to know HOW Molly came to the Barksdale family. I know she married Witt and why, but I don't know how she came to be around them all. So only four stars but I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of revenge...and love July 16, 2012
By Juli D
Format:Kindle Edition
Historical romance author Debra Glass' latest release, Scarlet Widow, builds on a Tennessean Civil war legend.

Molly Barksdale has long been in love with the three Barksdale brothers, Witt, Hardin, and Greer, and though she married Witt, she yet dreams of all three. When war comes, things couldn't possibly be more complicated.

Or can they? The Yankees roll through Maury County and kill Witt in the most brutal fashion. Then Colonel Meshach January and his men show up at Molly's plantation, and threaten her household if they don't give up the traitor Hardin. Hardin, who is accused of killing January's men in retribution for his brother's death. When she won't betray him, January's soldiers violate her.

When Hardin and Greer find out about the transgression, Hardin goes after the soldiers, knife in hand, while Greer offers to marry Molly. But how can she pick one brother, when she loves both? Or will fate take the choice--and Hardin--out of the equation?

What happens? Read Scarlet Widow and find out!

In Scarlet Widow, Debra Glass once again builds an intriguing story into the fabric of Civil War. This arrangement of the love triangle is new territory for Debra, but as usual, the love scenes are hot-hot, and the heroes too (I couldn't decide which I liked best, myself ;)). If you love history and romance, do check out The Scarlet Widow--and all Debra's works.
