With System splitting, it is very apparent who had the penchant for song writing between them. No longer do you look through the liner notes of SOAD's disography and have to guess who had more of an influence in the lyrics of a song when you see split credit between Malakian/Tankian.
This album falls flat on its face with abhorent lyrical content. Daron Malakian must take 5 minutes per song and write whatever elementary school dribble that pops into his head. Musically, the album is acceptable but lyrics make it utterly forgettable.

Brilliant beyond measure,

Without a doubt this entire album makes up for System of a Down's hiatus. It is the perfect complement to Serj Tankian's "Elect the Dead" and it feels fresh and new. "Babylon", "Stoner-Hate", "Universe", "Chemicals", "Enemy" and "They Say" are probably some of the best songs on this album, a must have for any System of a Down fan, or anyone looking for something new.

I knew Daron was a weird one. This cd proves it. I wish System of a Down would get back together, so we don't get more of this crap. There are a few good songs, but he does too much weird/stupid stuff with his voice. The lyrics are really.... dumb, half the time.

This is a great albut but the lyrics are simpe. The music is top notch. I've seen the vids on youtube and knew I was buying this album. As a bonus for me, Franky Perez is the guitarist & backing vocals, I'm a huge fan of him and his album Poor Mans Son.

When I listen to music I never listen to the album in order and I pay absolutely no attention to the names of the songs. This album is a perfect example of why I listen to albums that way. There is no begining or end to this album it just keeps on going awesome song after awesome song. You can't even get stuck on a song because the next song coming grabs your attention again. I most highly reccomend this album and I honestly don't own a SOAD album or Serj's album. I like there music just never bought it. I preordered this album. I was introduced to SCOB thru XM radio and then I checked out the Myspace page and Im hooked. Im glad I bought this album.

(Nearly) System of a Down,

Eventually I am comparing this with System of a Down (SOAD) as Daron and John were (maybe still are) part of the SOAD team. Moreover, Daron was the leading song writer in the band. So the question is: Is the magic there?
Compared to SOAD, It has less but still catchy riffs. The melodic backbone is there with catchy verses. It is mellower then SOAD, but still it is a guitar driven album. The song structures are less complex - without those up and down tempo changes. The songs are more straightforward. The album has a live feeling in terms of production, which I believe is one of the strengths of the LP. The mixing is very mainstream. Vocals are up in the front with guitars and the rhythm section very easy to follow. Social awareness within the lyrics... Re-name the project as SOAD and you will definitely have a million seller in your hand. This is a very good album if you are into SOAD, but still something is missing. This is why, this is Scars on Broadway and not SOAD.

Scars can be awesome,

This album is almost like a mixture of really awesome Red hot Chili Peppers and SOAD. It is the only complete album that i have heard in awhile.

Ok no joke I am a fan of System Of A Down and totally support what they are doing with these side projects and really opened this album up with open arms and an open mind. There are songs that have System of A Down like sound in it but the band really should have spent more time developing their own sound more. Some tracks felt very repetitive especially lyrically Darren seems to just repeat certain lyrics a lot towards the end of the track. It almost seemed as if they couldn't figure out a way to wind down their tracks. There were three tracks though that I can listen to without pressing forward on my cd player. Over all I do believe after listening to Elect The Dead I believe that these guys are like Voltron, they make decent music apart but together they have an amazing chemistry. Over all expect to hear some repetition if your ok with that then you will enjoy this album. Over all personally I didn't like it and truly gave this album a chance and really wanted to like it. But it didn't deliver.

Man, this is the most catchiest thing ive heard in a long time. Great riffs, brilliant vocal melodies and funny as hell lyrics, some pretty deep and insightful too. You can hear from this album, who exactly is the musical mastermind behind System of a Down. Daron has mastered the art of writing great pop tunes and "heavying" them up a bit. So disappointed they have pulled out of "Soundwave 2009". If you like anything about SOAD you MUST get this album.

Daron Rules!,
This review is from: Scars On Broadway (Audio CD)
As we all know, SOAD broke up a couple years ago due to internal tensions within the band. Many fans and, most likely Serj Tankian himself, felt that Daron Malakian was taking too much control over the band. On the Mesmerize/hypnotize records Daron sang quite a bit more than he had before; it didn't bother me and it sure as hell doesn't bother me now.
After listening to this album it's crystal clear who the genius behind SOAD was. Although Serj delivered wonderful vocals, it appears that Daron has the incredible sense of melody and songwriting that made SOAD so great. This album is less metal and more in your face hard rock. Unlike the choppy sound on SOAD records, Scars On Broadway brings a much more streamlined melodic sound to the table. The songs are extremely catchy; there isn't a single track that I don't like, and it flows together as an album very well. I was pretty dissapointed with Serj Tankian's solo record because he tried to make a record that sounded exactly like SOAD, but it didn't work; the guitar work was flat and uninspiring and the melody was almost completely gone. Scars on Broadway is just Daron writing what he wants to and doing an incredible job. Buy this album now! |
