5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, January 27, 2006
This review is from: Scary Baby (Audio CD)
I wish I had discovered these guys sooner. Since getting the CD I haven't been able to stop playing. Gregg Potter is one of the greatest drummers I have EVER heard!!! Skender's bass riffs make me shake my ass. Matt Mercado's vocal style is unique and killer. I just cannot get enough of these guys and cannot wait to see them live!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary Baby kicks ass!, December 6, 2005
This review is from: Scary Baby (Audio CD)
The Good
"Scary Baby" hits you with an onslaught of frantic drum pounding, meaty riffs, and thumping bass lines. Vocalist Matt Mercado has a brooding, yet melodic vocal delivery that reminds me of a pop-ier version of Zakk Wylde. "Ditch Kitty" invokes a little influence from Monster Magnet with its mix of acoustic and electric changes. It's another strong delivery for Matt as he switched between singing and a speaking. "Tried to Save" you starts off dark and subdued, but quick switches to an upbeat, riff driven rocker. Mercado has a great soulful sound here.

"Bitch Ass" is more of rap/rock track that I believe is making fun of the genre and lifestyle, but I could be wrong. Percussion and bass run rampant over "Leather Messiah". The chorus is quite catchy with its falsetto highs. A hard rock driving riff dominates "What I Say" early on, but a twangy funk riff soon takes over. "Canon Ball Dream" is slower and more laid back than previous tracks and would play of well on rock radio.

The Bad
Not a damn thing!

The Verdict
To describe what $upermer˘ado sounds like is impossible. They combine so many genre styles, that they may have created a new one. Scary Baby is predominantly a hard rock album that incorporates lots of bass leads and frantic drum changes with its heavy guitar riffs and solos. It could even be classified as a hard rock dance album (if there's such a thing), with its upbeat tempos and driving percussive elements. The lyrics are catchy and delivered with just enough grit to keep it rock, while at the same time using melody and falsetto to make it pop. Instead of trying to confuse you more, why don't a just say this; Scary Baby kicks ass!

5.0 out of 5 stars Doc's Review: Tight Heavy Metal with an infusion of Rap and Funk, November 26, 2005
This review is from: Scary Baby (Audio CD)
This is Supermercado's 1st CD. They are a band out of Chicago, Illinois. They have a unique sound which consists of smart, heavy metal with intricate chord progressions complemented by 2 talented singers, awesome funk bass and complex drums. The lead guitar player is a guy named Michael Ray Garrett. I've seen Michael play before. This guy is a combination of Yngwie Malmsteen and Michael Schenker all in 1. It is a wonder that he has not been discovered yet. His playing is clear and tight on the CD. The solos are somewhat restrained on the CD but live this guy shreds. His playing really stands out in the 1st track "Scary Baby" and the 3rd "Sparklz". These tunes are heavy but sophisticated and hopefully will get a lot of air time on some of the progressive radio stations. The bass player is Skender, who has been in the Chicago rock scene since the 80's (Teenage Radiation). Skender is a phenomenal bass player and this comes through on the CD. Matt Mercado plays rhythm guitar and sings. He is somewhat of a rarity nowadays in that this guy really can sing! He sounds like a cross between David Lee Roth and Bruce Dickinson. The other vocals job belongs to Cliff "Killa Kat". Cliff has a very wide vocal range and brings something very special to the band. Lastly (but certainly not least), is Gregg Potter on drums. This guy is a world class drummer. His timing is right on and supports the rest of the band perfectly.
The songs on the CD are all strong. The standouts are Scary Baby, Ditch Kitty, Sparklz, Turn it On, Leather Messiah, What I Say, and Supermercado. Any of these songs can be singles. This CD is very different than a lot of the stuff that is coming out these days. They are all tremendously talented musicians. In fact, there is not a weak link among the 5 of them. They complement each other and sound great. If you are looking for quality music, then this CD is definitely for you.
