How many of us now tottering on middle age grew up with the adventures of Caspar the Friendly Ghost and Wendy the Good Little Witch comic books! Jill Thompson in her growing SCARY GODMOTHER oeuvre gives millennial youngsters (and their significant elders) an entirely enchanting bit of whimsy. Ms. Thompson is an artist who has cleaned and broken her brushes as a comic book illustrator. Of course, this shows in her droll illustrations for her own books. If, however, you look long and caringly enough, you'll find wisps of Rackham, Hogarth, Charles Addams, Edward Gorey, and even BETTY BOOP in the entrancing brushstrokes illumined here. The story is hilariously witty, adequately outright funny for the youngsters, but more than sufficiently jovial for the eldsters. And parents! NO, it is not TOO SCARY for your wee ones! This particular volume even includes an explanation of those peculiar, SCARY THINGS under the bed. Way too fun to be merely a children's picture book.

This book is absolute fun for parents and children alike. Not only are Ms. Thompson's illustrations lovely, but her story is funny. I had the pleasure of meeting her and having our copy signed recently, and can say that she is a kind person as well as an entertaining story teller. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to show their children that there is nothing to be afraid of in the dark.

Jill Thompson's Scary Godmother is certainly a treat! The story revolves around young Hannah Marie and her first Trick or Treat outing with her older cousin Jimmy and his friends. Well, Jimmy is quite the little stinker. Not wanting to drag along "the baby", Jimmy and his friends do their best to scare the dickens out of Hannah. Little do they know that Hannah is protected by her very own SCARY GODMOTHER ( and a host of monstery pals) and soon the tables are turned.

The Scary Godmother is a cross between a comic book and a story book with richly detailed, painted illustration and some panel to panel storytelling and word balloons. The characters are Fun Scary and children of all ages will love it. The main character is a cross between your fairy godmother and a Halloween witch, with a striped witch's hat and stockings and a black tu tu and little purple bat's wings! It's definitely a book that children will want to be read again and again. (believe me, I know.) It is also for those who simply love Halloween and the quirky side of things. Think Charles Addams, Edward Gorey, Tim Burton...

Jill Thompson is easily one of the most gifted artists I have ever seen. Her work is truly beautiful, and every illustration leaps off the page. This book, as well as the others in the Scary Godmother series, are perfect for Halloween lovers of any age. I'm 28 and I just love sharing these stories with my young nieces and nephews. Thank you, Jill, for giving us such a wonderful world filled with loveable characters!

This is a great book, it is worth the price. The art is fantastic, my 3 year old daughter loves it, and so do I. Good clean spooky fun!

Wonderful for children, awesome art, and a charming story that I think is appropiate for the youngest of children who are able to follow it. The story is about a little girl named Hannah Marie about to go on her first trick or treat outing with older children instead of her parents. An older cousin, displeased at having been made to take Hannah, carries out a dirty trick to scare her bad enough for her to beg to go home so he can get rid of her. Only Hannah is saved by her Scary Godmother and the tables eventually get turned! In addition, it was even educational (such as explaining the different kinds of bats and why they're good creatures in a way that I think a 5-year-old could appreciate).

I believe this is a treat for all ages. I'm 24 and I've already read it all the way through twice, loving it the second time even more than the first (as I caught more details). And if that's not enough, I LOVE the smell of it! :-)

Though just a note: I ordered this in November and despite Amazon claiming to have it in stock, I didn't get it until a week ago. But I'm glad I'm waited for it instead of trying to get something else!
