Biography

“I’ve been deep into electronic music my entire life. The first records I ever owned were ‘Fat of Land’ by the Prodigy and ‘Come To Daddy’ by Aphex Twin,” raves Sonny Moore, better known as emerging electronic visionary SKRILLEX. “Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails were also early influences. I’ve been dabbling in making electronic tracks on programs like Fruity Loops since I was 14 years old.”… Read more in Amazon's Skrillex Store

Editorial Reviews

The next release on mau5trap is a special one. We would like to introduce Skrillex and his fabulous release 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites'. Skrillex is a young talent hailing from Los Angeles. With big support from deadmau5 himself and currently on tour in the US with him, Skrillex is already keeping up with the big hitters. He brings us an EP of such eclecticism that it has something for every dancefloor, every stereo and everyone who is into good quality electronica. Starting of this EP is Rock N Roll a big electro stomper with his signature warm synths and riffs that you ll become familiar with as you work your way through his tracks and realise the production quality is second to none. Onto Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites with a very memorable riff and heavy hitting dubstep, a great title track which moves us perfectly into Kill Everybody another electronic, mind blowing production. When you get to All I Ask Of You, you will notice that Skrillex has more to his repertoire than electrifying riffs and stomping bass lines - yet building melodic synths and beautiful melodies combined with the vocal talents of Penny. Scrillex teams up with London collective Foreign Beggars and Dubstep producer Bare Noize for Scatta - another smashing electro/dubstep monster. To finish the mini album, Srillex brings us a melodic synth driven piece of music with gorgeous vocoders that round off the release in style. Also included in the package are three great remixes from Noisia, Zedd and Bare Noize. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

So I bought this album on iTunes (don't do it unless you got a gift card like I did, it's $7.99 there). Lemme just say, this album hits hard and sounds freaking amazing. Its not like other electronica, it's dirty and hard. The best songs are definitely "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" or "Rock 'n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)." I'd say it was worth the $7.99 I paid for it so pick this up at $5.99 and crank up the volume.

EDIT: I've been listening to this a fair amount lately and I'd like to add that several of the other songs are good. I have taken a liking to "Scatta" as of late. Theres a mix of all sorts of music. "Scatta" is a rap song thrown in with the dubstep and electronica music. Some of it seems more rock but its all awesome.

I purchased this EP after stumbling upon the title track and was equally impressed by the entire thing altogether -- Skrillex (Sonny Moore) clearly has has a knack for extremely well polished production and instantly catchy, almost pop-like melodies. His tracks roar with a huge over-the-top sound which typically consists of bobbing dubstep beats, sharp buzzsaw synths, and vocals from all different sources, ranging from obscure samples to guest vocalists to Sonny's own voice. At the same time, its never overwhelming. Even the three remixes are well worth their place on the EP. They aren't there simply to fill disc space either; Quite the contrary! They're actually as good as the originals. The Zedd Remix of "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" has to be my personal favorite, which turns said track into nervous fidget house music. Its epicness that matches the original in its own way. In short, this is modern electronic dance music at its finest. You won't be disappointed!

Setting the Record Straight January 19, 2012
Format:MP3 Download
I'm responding here to the recent hype around Skrillex as a "dubstep artist." I'd like to take this opportunity to set the record straight for those of you just encountering the dubstep genre through Skrillex's music. Skrillex is not dubstep. He takes the worst and most cliched conventions of dubstep ("wobbly bass," for example), mashes them up with glitch techno bleeps and electrofarts, and wraps them up in emo/aggro rock posturing.

I find Skrillex's music shrill in tone and sophomoric in content, nothing like the subtly unsettling atmospherics, rolling basslines, and unconventional rhythms of quality dubstep from artists such as Shackleton, Burial, Kode9, Zomby, and Benga. I'd recommend any of those artists and the "5 Years of Hyperdub" compilation for a peek into what dubstep is really about.

If anything, I think (hope) the so-called brostep trend led by people like Skrillex will eventually open a few doors into better music for younger listeners, rather than exploding into another vacuous, faux-adolescent, emo/aggro rock lurch (cf. circa late 90s/early 00s Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc.) dressed up as dubstep. Trust me, there's more sophisticated music out there that rewards with repeated listens. I've listed a few artists above. I'd encourage Skrillex listeners to check them out.

Thanks for reading.
