Biography

In a cluttered home studio in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, mere blocks from where he wrote “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites”, the song that sold millions of copies and helped instigate one of the largest shifts in modern American music in recent memory, the galvanizing totem of a youth movement daps at a midi controller, ceaselessly cuing the same snare sound over ... Skrillex is incredibly talented and utilizes a highly unique sound.

Truly a must for anyone that is just getting into dubstep but I believe long time dubstep listeners can really appreciate Skrillex.
Wes
I really like songs that go very well with my subwoofer on my stereo and this CD complements it very well.

So I bought this album on iTunes (don't do it unless you got a gift card like I did, it's $7.99 there). Lemme just say, this album hits hard and sounds freaking amazing. Its not like other electronica, it's dirty and hard. The best songs are definitely "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" or "Rock 'n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)." I'd say it was worth the $7.99 I paid for it so pick this up at $5.99 and crank up the volume.

EDIT: I've been listening to this a fair amount lately and I'd like to add that several of the other songs are good. I have taken a liking to "Scatta" as of late. Theres a mix of all sorts of music. "Scatta" is a rap song thrown in with the dubstep and electronica music. Some of it seems more rock but its all awesome.

I got this on vinyl, not from amazon but from a store. The problem I found is that whoever produced the disc may not have been too bright.

The first problem you notice isn't about the disc, but the content. "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" present on the album is not the same studio recording that comes with the digital or cd copy. I understand electro music always varies (especially live) but this version present on the album is extremely disappointing. As anyone that's listened to the song knows the 'drops' (I hate using that word) have a set progression, occasionally fading back to the melody present outside of the drop, and then returning to the bass/wobble/stuff. The problem is on vinyl this progression is entirely lost, it simply sounds as though the song is skipping (it's not, I tried two copies to be sure) around and has no 'flow' to it whatsoever. This song is not enjoyable to listen to on vinyl and I have no idea why this version was included on the album. The downloadable copy that comes with the album is the normal, good version of the song, strangely enough. And all of the other songs on the album are normal transfers.

The second problem with the album is that whoever produced it Messed up the pacing near the center, and the album gets progressively slower as you reach the middle tracks. All of the songs are noticeably slowed near the center and as such, the pitch is off. This is not my turntable changing speed, but the tracks themselves have been fabricated incorrectly.

Overall, I don't even really like skrillex all that much, but I liked these songs and bought the vinyl because I was curious to what dub would sound like on vinyl.

Skrillex's production quality is unmatched. Listen to this album in the highest quality you can find (~320 kbps) and with the best headphones/speakers you can find (for me it's the Ultimate Ears Triple Fi 10), and his production will really stand out. Skrillex is incredibly talented and utilizes a highly unique sound. Part of his talent is his ability to draw from all forms of music- Electro, Dubstep, Rap (see: Scatta), Pop (see: Lady Gaga remixes), and his metal (see: The Sadness will never end) background to form an amazing and intense sound. Skrillex does not judge what is good music or not- he sees music as neutrally as possible, mixes and melds all these styles on the platform that is electro. In order to produce the trebles, mids, and bass as cleanly as he does, there is no substitute but a lot of time and effort. Get the best quality Skrillex you can find, combine that with good speakers/headphones, and you will have one heck of a time

Some interesting sounds, 95% electronic, with a similar beat. I found the music tedious after a few songs, actually. I like to hear new sounds and see what I think, so I downloaded this EP. I'm not really sorry I downloaded it, but I won't be listening to it often.

I'm responding here to the recent hype around Skrillex as a "dubstep artist." I'd like to take this opportunity to set the record straight for those of you just encountering the dubstep genre through Skrillex's music. Skrillex is not dubstep. He takes the worst and most cliched conventions of dubstep ("wobbly bass," for example), mashes them up with glitch techno bleeps and electrofarts, and wraps them up in emo/aggro rock posturing.

I find Skrillex's music shrill in tone and sophomoric in content, nothing like the subtly unsettling atmospherics, rolling basslines, and unconventional rhythms of quality dubstep from artists such as Shackleton, Burial, Kode9, Zomby, and Benga. I'd recommend any of those artists and the "5 Years of Hyperdub" compilation for a peek into what dubstep is really about.

If anything, I think (hope) the so-called brostep trend led by people like Skrillex will eventually open a few doors into better music for younger listeners, rather than exploding into another vacuous, faux-adolescent, emo/aggro rock lurch (cf. circa late 90s/early 00s Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc.) dressed up as dubstep. Trust me, there's more sophisticated music out there that rewards with repeated listens. I've listed a few artists above. I'd encourage Skrillex listeners to check them out.

Thanks for reading.

Too many remixes of the same songs over and over again on this album, not enough original work. you pay for really 4 songs on the whole album. it's okay but want more originals on a full lengh album.
