Grade 4-6–Anthologies of stories for sleepovers and camp-outs are always in big demand. Unfortunately, most of these 37 tales are unlikely to find an audience. The stories are divided into sections such as Haunted Habitats, Famous Phantoms, and Messages from Beyond. Most are short, generally two pages, and all made their first appearance in earlier Sterling publications. Unlike some of those titles, Scary includes no introductions to the selections or narrators, or elements that might tie the tales together. The new version of Valentino's Ring is somewhat stilted and lacks the detail of the earlier story. With its undistinguished black-and-white block prints, this volume has a very unpolished look. Those looking for scary stories would more likely enjoy Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books (HarperCollins), with pencil illustrations by Stephen Gammell.–Cheryl Ashton, Amherst Public Library, OH

I bought this book along with another scary tales book and was not dissappointed.I took this book to my last 2 camping trips and told these stories to my family around the campfire.It is amazing how much fun you can have sitting around a campfire and telling scary stories.The stories in this book are designed for this purpose, they are short 5 minute reads of some good creepy stories.The kids and adults enjoyed the stories found here.

These mildly spooky ghost tales are a waste of reading time for the most part. There are four stories towards the end of the book that could be worked with to form the core plot of a good campfire yarn if you add some of your own creativity. Most of what's here would bore your audience and ruin your reputation as a storyteller. A completely useless book if your audience are boy scouts.
