Gr 5-8--These 10 intense, enigmatic short stories go a step beyond R.L. Stine's popular "Goosebumps" series (Scholastic). The selections deal with a variety of paranormal and supernatural phenomena, such as extraterrestrials, time warps, Ouija boards, and fetish dolls. Some portray human thoughts and emotions controlling the surreal plots, while others show humans at the mercy of unconstrained powers. R.C. Welch's Scary Stories for Stormy Nights (Lowell, 1995) or Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (HarperCollins, 1981) are more straightforward collections for middle-grade readers, but Ury's title can even frighten adults, if read late enough at night.
