excellent book!!,

This review is from: Scats and Tracks of the Desert Southwest (Scats and Tracks Series) (Paperback)
I found this book to be informative and very user friendly, especially since it is hand held size, making easy to take into the field. Halfpenny also gives accurate measurements of track size and gait patterns for each species and a brief description of the animals. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on the scat of each species with very detail drawings. There is also a section on the tracks of various bird species. a must for everyone interested in tracking in the southwest.

Best scat and track field book available,

I have several scat and track field guides, and this is my favorite. It has excellent illustrations of the animals, scats, tracks, and track patterns. It has nifty little size guides to the tracks right on the same page and a ruler on the back cover. It covers a large geographical area: CA, NV, UT, AZ, CO, NM, and TX. The intro gives a great overview of how to learn how to track. This book is well worth the money!

Good drawings and illustrations. I wish there were a few more critters included and I don't understand why Alligators are listed for the southwest! But I would recommend this to another biologist. Falcon Guides Rock!

This little book is pretty handy for the wildlife watcher and hunter alike. The only thing I'd have done with it would have been to add photos of the gritters instead of drawings. And being I lost my first one to a leaky water pipe in our basement, I'd have made the pages waterproof. But this is a great book.

Small and compact. Thorough. For all naturalists who like to hike and explore in the desert. Great for your backpack. This is the field guide many forget and very valuable when out in the wild.

Not a deep covered book , but, one that guides you to look for major details of the animals listed. The black and white drawings are clear and help to "readily" find the animal that made them. I recommend it to any traveler who hasn't a knowledge about tracks of desert animals to carry this one for quick ID of the track maker.
