Book Description

Denver stockbroker, Finny Aletter, dreams of quitting her cutthroat job to restore historic houses, but the murder of her boss—and ex-lover—Elliot Fulton keeps her in the world of scavengers.

When a prized manuscript that once belonged to Elliot surfaces, Finny tops the list of possible killers.

Now, Finny must find Elliot's killer by tracing the manuscript's origin and stay one step ahead of Lieutenant Chris Barelli, the cynical homicide detective working the case, if he is to see her as more than a sexy suspect.

"...a quick and likable amateur sleuth—a Nancy Drew with an MBA and a sex life." ~Publishers Weekly
", engrossing mystery." ~The Midwest Book Review

Scavenger Hunt
Obstacle Course

Multi-published author Yvonne Montgomery lives with her husband, a pair of dachshunds, two indoor cats, and a growing flock of (outdoor) sparrows in one of the century-old houses in Denver's historic Capitol Hill. Creaking stairs and quirky nooks and crannies provide inspiration for Yvonne's current work, the Wisdom Court novels, a paranormal series set in Boulder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining romp July 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The heroine of this story, Finny Aletter, has the right combination of characteristics to make this story a fun and fast read. She's working in a male-dominated company, yet has nearly reached the rank of partner. But she has one flaw - the affair she had with her boss - that comes full circle to haunt her when he is murdered. She somewhat inadvertently becomes involved in solving the case and has a series of entertaining experiences along the way.

In the end, who committed the crime is an unexpected surprise, which is the hallmark of a good mystery. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Cozy Mystery January 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just when burned-out stockbroker Finny decides to call it quits and switch to a new career, her boss and secret ex-lover turns up murdered. When she becomes one of the prime suspects, circumstances - including her love-hate relationship with the investigating officer Barelli - propel Finny into amateur detective mode. Even when her life is endangered, she reveals how tough she can be, determined to find out who killed her boss while searching for the precious object someone is killing to possess.

Montgomery does a good job of salting the story with numerous suspects, all equally capable and motivated to commit murder, with twists, turns, and assorted interesting and sordid characters. After meeting Finny's coworkers, it's easy to see why she needs a change.

Like the Sue Grafton books, the story takes place before the advent of cell phones. I kept waiting for Finny to pull out a phone and call for help whenever she got into trouble, but the Denver locale and gutsy Finny more than made up for it. A good read. Will definitely get the next one in the series.

"Scavenger Hunt" takes the reader for a wild ride with numerous suspects, murders, and plot twists.

The ending is disappointing, but finding out whodunit is refreshing.

I recommend "Scavenger Hunt."

4.0 out of 5 stars Scavengers July 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This gives a less than light-hearted meaning to the scavenger hunt. A descriptive story with a good sense of place. Finny is a character you enjoy reading about. The unraveling of her life accompanies the unraveling of the mystery. Lucky for Funny she has a new life before her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting as well as witty June 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Finny Aletter is a successful broker with a prosperous Denver brokerage. Successful, but as burnt out as her long-over affair with her boss. She yearns to quit and put her considerable carpenter skills to use renovating homes. Her plans go awry when she inadvertently bursts into the police investigation of the murder of her boss. In a confrontation with Detective Barelli she quickly becomes suspect #1. In self-defense she turns to detecting and instigates a scavenger hunt for a lost manuscript. The hunt includes scavengers, no less, and turns Finney into a race with death.
Montgomery is a master with descriptions and wonderfully brings to life the Denver neighborhood's lively mix of young and old, as well as any city's inevitable bag ladies and bums.
Scavenger Hunt was a fun, entertaining read, and I've just downloaded the second in the series, Obstacle Course.
