Scene It? The DVD Movie Game is for the film buff what a double-fudge brownie sundae is for the chocoholic. Players take turns moving around the game board and answering challenges, which usually take the form of trivia questions--about movies, of course. Questions are culled from either a box of cards, much like Trivial Pursuit, or from onscreen prompts that follow movie clips. The included DVD is loaded with snippets from recent movies, although the occasional classic sneaks in too. Multiple questions are asked about each clip--identify the title of the movie, name actors in the scene, recall some minor detail--so that even when the clips begin to repeat, it will take some time before questions do too. (Subsequent DVDs are also said to be in the works.) The game board, which looks like a cross between an accordian and a film reel, can be folded out to accommodate longer games or closed up for shorter ones. Scene It? was definitely built to be a party game, and another advantage of the DVD is that there's no need to explain the rules. Instead, just press play and hope that everyone simmers down enough to pay attention. Plus, the hokey music and neon "You Are a Winner" screen that ends the game is certain to send those individuals who like winning a bit too much--and you know who you are--into an absolute frenzy. --David Morel

I love movies and consider myself a moderate movie buff. When I heard about this game I knew I had to get my hands on it. It was sold out at all the Nordstrom and Toys R Us I visited which only increased my interest, and after a month I finally got a copy. After playing it with some friends, I still believe that it's a great idea, but this version of the idea could use some polish.

The flaws I encountered:
--The instructions are vague in some areas. We had to make a few things up as we went along.
--The rules that are explained and the board itself contain some rules which seem silly and detract from the game. The inventors of the game clearly spent most of their time obsessing over the DVD itself and less on the gameplay.
--The text on the buzz cards is silly. After reading one or two, no one bothered reading them anymore and we just looked to the end to see what the penalty or reward would be.
--The questions on the cards are too easy. My friends are moderate moviegoers, yet when we all play in a group it's rare to get one of the questions on the cards wrong. Most of the clips are from movies of the last 10 to 20 years; they could easily increase the difficulty of the game by focusing the clips and trivia questions on some older movies. It would appeal to movie buffs more and also add some cinematic educational value.
--They did not get movie clips from all the major studios. Only 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks, MGM, Columbia, and Universal granted right to clips from their movies. That leaves out the largest library, that of Warner Brothers, and also Paramount among the major studios. And independent films? Forget it.
--Some of the film clips didn't play properly. They would just flash across the screen briefly and then the question would pop up, or we'd get stuck in a loop where the same question played over and over again no matter what we did. In those cases we had to pop the DVD out and start over.
--The game will need updating soon. It appears that there are a few hundred chapters on the DVD, each being one question, and a couple hundred trivia cards with about 3 questions each. After playing it the second time, I could already tell that we'll run through all the questions really soon.

The game does have a lot of promise. The all-play questions are great when you have a huge group of people, and everyone loves watching clips from their favorite movies. The trivia card questions are moderately interesting, but the DVD trivia questions are a riot. Some of the different types of questions include naming a movie when shown a scene in which a character is digitally erased, naming a movie title when shown two pictures that each represent one word from the title, being the first to guess a movie title as letters are gradually revealed Wheel-of-Fortune style, putting a list of four movies in chronological order, and answering a trivia question after watching a movie clip. In fact, it's nearly as fun (and some might argue that's it more enjoyable) to dispense with the board and game pieces and just put the DVD on when friends are over and just answer questions.

All in all, this game will appeal most to the average moviegoer with a DVD player. For movie buffs or fairly knowledgeable moviegoers, the creators or someone else should iron out the kinks and come out with a more advanced version of this game. I'd buy that in a second.

Having recently received this game as a Christmas present, I was delighted at the fun I have had while playing this game!!

Then first of its kind, it features a DVD as part of the game that plays movie clips and asks you questions after having seen it. This game is related to Trivial Pursuit in that you move around a gameboard and you roll a category die that offers you a My Play (a movie scene on the DVD and a question that follows), an All Play (as in My Play but all players participate and are competing against each other) or a choice of a variety of questions from a trivia card including:
Take 3
(player is given 3 clues about an actor or a movie and must guess the answer from the clues given)

Songs and Slogans
(player must work out the movie from the song or slogan promoted at the time of release)

Pop Culture
(Can be any question relating to movies or actors)

Of course every question is timed (your choice of 10, 20 or 30 seconds) and the potential fun to be had in this game is huge!! You can play individually (up to 4 players) or in teams (up to 4 teams of as many players as wanted) and the beauty of this game is that almost anyone can play. I would recommend ages 12 and up, as it may be a little hard for those younger children. Burt questions range from old movies from the 1960s to 1970s right up to the present day. Questions I've seen have revolved around such movies as Ghost, ET: The Extra Terrestial, Top Gun, Terms of Endearment, True Lies, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Mission Impossible, Steel Magnolias and Field of Dreams, as well as many more.

I have played this game for a few nights now and we have seen repeats of the same clips but with different questions. The good news is that they are planning the release of several "refills" if you like, extra DVDs that contain more questions as well as different aspects such as "Classic TV" which makes this game timeless and able to be used over and over.

One of the highlights is seeing hilarious clips from movies you may not have seen before and as a result of this movie, I have vowed to go and hire The Commitments and Close Encounters of a Third Kind after being intrigued by the clips I have seen.

There is also a variety of different questions available in the All Play to make it even more fun and to keep players interested. There are questions that list about 7 characters played by one actor and you have to guess the actor, there are also questions that involve audio sound, questions that involve filling in the blanks of a movie title and questions that involve working out a movie from a montage of images. My personal favourite is the question that involves two pictures that you have to study and come up with a movie title with. For example, there was a picture of a brick wall and a picture of a street - the movie is Wall Street!

I haven't covered every type of question or avenue of fun involved with this game but to finish up, I would definitely recommend buying this game!! It's especially great among large groups of friends!! Just be careful about the rules as they are not specific in certain areas and some rules may need to be agreed on before the game is started to avoid arguments! This game is hard to get your hands on as most stores have sold out but start searching, it's a great game that can be enjoyed for a long time!!!

(I recommend trying the Bon who seem to have a few copies in my state or if all else fails, try eBay!)

I bought this game for my 22 year old son for Christmas. We played all Christmas day and had more fun and laughs. My son took the game home with him so now I'm trying to find one to buy. Everyone who we've played the game with so far wants to purchase the game. You do get repeat film clips and questions but if you hit return on your remote you'll get a fresh question!! Can't wait to find the game and for more DVD's to come out. One of the best games I've played in a long time!!!!
