If your a fan of the other SceneIt's for the 360, your best to avoid this low budget pile of crap. First off the entire format of the game has changed for the worse. There is no online play and no avatar support (it includes it's own characters to choose from). It has Big Button support but it seems sluggish and slow responding. It's obvious that it was not meant to use these controllers due to the fact that there is an Xbox 360 controller taking up half the screen during play to show you how to buzz in (yes seriously!!!). It reminded me of playing a low budget WII port or like going back and watching the never aired pilot of you favorite TV show. Save your money and hope Microsoft adds more downloadable content for SceneIt Box Office Smash.

Usually when I purchase a game I extensively research reviews, so most purchases are either solid or I get what I expect. The first XBox Scene It was great, the second one was excellent, incorporating avatars and sporting a great sense of style and fun. So with Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! I figured that they would just keep building on the past success, I did not even check reviews. Big mistake. The game is a disappointment on so many levels, it's hard to know where to begin. There is no support for Xbox avatars, it tells you to log in, but gives no indication that you have. Then it presents a warning to log-in or questions will not be saved. Still, you have no idea if you are logged in because your account avatar never shows up.
The game takes place on one basic bland screen. There is an on-screen host and when his lips actually do sync with his dialog he's pretty skippable. Questions are good with clips from current features, but the whole presentation looks like a bad Wii game. The last game you and your fellow avatars went zooming around on a couch with beautifully rendered animation sequences. This one you get a very brief cut scene that looks like entry level 3D renderings. I could go on, but why bother? If you are even remotely interested in this game, stop yourself, and get the last one, Scene It? Box Office Smash (best in the series) or even the first one. Scene It? on the consoles has dropped to a surprising new low in which it may not recover.

If you've never played Scene it on the Xbox before, do yourself a favor and buy the previous edition, Scene it Box Office Smash. You'll save money and have more fun. That version was built specifically for the Xbox 360, and had avatar support, online play, and tons of fun modes designed around the Xbox 360 big button controller. This game was designed with the Wii in mind, so it's unresponsive, ugly, doesn't have much content, and is real dumbed down. They took out online play and avatar support!!! If you already own the two previous games, still DON'T buy this game. You will hate it compared to the others.
Hopefully Microsoft will release another DLC pack for either of the old versions so we can continue to play them until next year when maybe a decent edition of this game will return.

Although I read the reviews sometimes it's wise to form your own opinion about something, especially with Amazon's great return policy, and it was a good thing I did. Although this game is not as great as the others it is still a great game to own and play with family and friends for a game night. I did love the fact that our avatar was in the one before but not having our avatars in the game doesn't make this a bad game not to own. How many other games do we play on a regular basis that doesn't incorporate our avatars but we still enjoy them? The fact that we can disable the host is also a plus for me. I actually got tired of hearing his voice on the other game and love that this simple omission actually sped up the game a little bit more giving us more time to play a few more before it's time for bed or for company to leave. There does seem to be a lag between the scenes at times when listening in to the movie clips and for that I took off a star. Besides that it's a great game and don't let the reviews discourage you from buying it. It almost did for me.

I bought this without reading any reviews, assuming it would be as solid as the first two Scene It games released for the Xbox 360. Big, big mistake!
I should have been skeptical about the fact that so little time had gone by since the second Scene It game. Through the magic of downloadable content, avatar support, and online play, it was in no need of an update. If you are buying your first Scene It game, go for Scene It, Box Office Smash-- it is the best triva game for the Xbox 360, period. If you find a decent deal, you may want to pick up the first installment, Scene It Lights Camera Action for the big button controllers and some easy achievements. The only good thing about this game is that the achievements are easy-- if that is what you are after, either rent the game or buy it cheap & then sell it.

I loved the last Scene It. Being able to play online made it extremely valuable, since my wife won't play with me anymore. Online play has been removed.
The interface is cheaper, there are fewer options, you can no longer use your avatar... it's just a piece of crap. I don't know what they were thinking when they made this. It's a complete rip-off. Great features from the previous game have been removed. That's ridiculous. What's new? New questions. It should have been a downloadable content pack for the previous game, not a whole new game. I'm furious with the makers of this game - if I could return it to the store, I would (it was a gift, so I can't). What a scam. Stay away, buy Box Office Smash instead.

An enjoyable third edition of Scene It,

As players of the first two XBox 360 editions of Scene it, we are enjoying playing this third edition.
I'm mostly writing here because the other reviews seem surprisingly negative, and not representative of our experience the game. There were some aspects of the new game that were a bit worse (graphics), and some that were improved (configuration, some new categories, ability to shut up the host, somewhat less quixotic bonuses). We enjoyed the game almost as much as the previous editions. Note that we are not online players, so we didn't care about that. If you like Scene it as a movie trivia game, I'd expect there was a good chance you'd enjoy the new edition.

This is clearly a case of bait and switch. The first game was great. The second was awesome. So of course, I figure this one would be as good or better and pick it up for the wife for her birthday. Whoops. I feel like I've been robbed.
It's not that it's horrible in and of itself. I mean, it's not great, it is pretty bad, but not terrible. It's just that it's a major step back from the last game. If this was the first in the series, it'd still be mediocre, but i'd probably do more research first. So either I'd not buy it or even if I did, I wouldn't expect as much. Instead, I thought it was of the same pedigree and that this series was a no brainer. This 3rd version is terrible. Maybe if the production company spent more time making the game than they did crediting themselves immediately following the game ending, the game would be better. But probably not. If you've played the other 2 games, you should not buy this for a couple reasons: firstly, you will be very disappointed because all the bells and whistles that made those games fun, is gone, and secondly, because if you do, you will validate the terrible and cynical business decision that was made to switch and downgrade development companies. If you haven't played the other 2 games, then you should obviously buy one of those (Box Office Smash is the best) instead of this one.

Like other people, I bought this game without reading the reviews thinking it would at least be as good as the prior versions. It is and isn't. The bottom line is that 75% of what made this game fun in the first place is still there....that is the gameplay. Even some of the puzzle types that were introduced in the last version remain.
Here are some good and bad features: Good: 1) Puzzle types are same as before 2) Game seems to play faster since you can skip through certain parts - including host 3) Puzzles have not started repeating yet (happened very soon in prior versions) Bad: 1) Characters (avatars). I don't mind playing as a different avatar but the grunts, groans and other verbalizations are just annoying. 2) Graphics scaled back 3) Loss of Xbox 360 avatar support Inexcusable: 1) No online play - I actually told my friend not to buy it because of this. There is one other major change that I am not sure how I feel about yet. When you get a puzzle wrong, it does not tell you the right answer. While this is good for replayability, I sometimes want to know. I'm torn on that one but leaning towards favoring this. After reading my review back to myself, I seem to have more positive than negative but I would still rate the game low because in this day and age, there is no excuse to move backwards and remove functionality. It's bad enough when full price is charged for no new features. Fun game but either rent it or wait for the inevitable price cuts.

My wife and I played the other SceneIt games quite a bit. We have only played this one a couple times so far. As others have mentioned, you can no longer use your avator as your character. You need to use one of a handful of pre made characters. It would have been nice to have your avatar, but does not affect gameplay in any way. Others have commented on the graphics showing a regular controller rather than the big botton controller. Again, it doesn't affect gameplay.
One change that I liked - the last place player is able to choose the puzzle (from a list of 3) once in a while (sequentials, visual puzzler, pop quiz, etc). My wife and I dislike similar puzzles, so we avoid things we do not enjoy (sequentials). Another thing I like so far - at least one new puzzle type that challenges you to match actors/actresses with their roles. There is a list of four roles and four actors, and you have to match them. It plays a bit like the sequentials puzzle. One change that I did not like - I love pixel flix (8 bit renditions of movies scenes). In BOS, you were able to watch the entire clip. This version ends the clip after everyone has answered. I don't know if I should answer quickly to score big, or watch the whole thing and be amused. If you enjoy games based on movie trivia, this is a good one to get. If you pick games based on being able to use your avatar in them (?), this game is not for you. |
