5.0 out of 5 stars A Harry Potter Trivia Fan's Dream!, July 18, 2007

This review is from: Scene It? Deluxe Harry Potter 2nd Edition (Toy)

While many found the first edition of the Harry Potter "Scene It" game to be either frightfully boring, or far too easy, the game-makers more than make up for past short-comings with this new deluxe 2nd edition.

This edition of "Harry Potter Scene It" includes detailed questions from the first 5 books, and the first 5 movies. Yes! -- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is included in this game! It's a real treat to have the 5th movie included within the game so soon after it's release in theatres!

There are 4 game pieces to choose from (including Fawkes the Phoenix, Buckbeak the Hippogriff, the Knight Bus, and the Durmstrang Ship). Each player chooses a game piece, and away you go! If more than 4 people wish to play, I recommend either pairing off into teams, or else grab a couple game pieces from a different boardgame (such as Monopoly) and use them instead! There's room for everyone to have fun!

The game-makers did an excellent job of creating questions that range from very easy, moderately difficult, and very hard. The majority of the hard questions usually pertain to the actors in the movies, and the logistics of the making of the films (such as "How many Ford Anglias were used in the filming of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'?" --- "Who was the first actor cast for 'Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone'?" --- "What item did Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) give to Daniel Radcliffe during their first meeting?"). During the first edition of this game, the questions were generally too easy, which is great for kids who are playing, but not as fun for adults.

The clips shown during the DVD portion of the game are a lot of fun. Sometimes the same clip will be shown more than once, but a different question will be asked each time! Most of the time the answers to the clip questions are fairly simple. At other times it's a little more challenging, especially during the mini-games played during the "all play" portion of the game (for those who are unfamiliar with the "Scene It" game format, an All Play is when a clip or game is played in which all the players are participating together, instead of in turns. The first player to shout out the answer wins the All Play round!).

Bottom line, this game is a lot of fun for Harry Potter fans of all ages, and it's a wonderful step up from the slightly disappointing 1st edition!

We got my daughter the deluxe 2nd ed. off Amazon for Christmas. The thing was, we already had the regular edition under the tree, but the deal for the deluxe was good, so we had her open one and then traded it for the other. Having had both, here is what you need to know:

There is NO BONUS DISC in Harry Potter Deluxe Ed. (there is one for the Disney one). They never made one! Amazon advertises one, and when we called them they apologized but they didn't fix the description. The bulleted info still claims there is a bonus disc.

Everything else is the same between the versions, except for 4 Harry Potter trading cards.

We called Scene-It to find out if they were really charging that much more for 4 trading cards and they said the deluxe has a tin box. Thing was, we had found a tin box (non-deluxe) that some stores had. So even the tin box (whoop-de-doo) wasn't even special (not that I would have paid extra for a box).

At least in the regular version we had, the box, board, etc were the same color, etc. Regardless, your not getting more questions or clips, or even better game pieces. Your getting 4 cards and possibly a better box.

As for the game itself, its pretty much the usual scene-it experience. I can't see adults sitting around and playing this, but its fun for kids who are huge Harry Potter fans. Despite what they say, though, you do need to be a huge fan to be competitive against someone that is. Especially if that person has read the books. While the game is completely movie based, reading the books gives a much better understanding of the movies and a huge advantage in this game. Make sure your child has someone who will be able to play with him/her.

I love this game. I own both this edition and the first one. If you're a fan of the Harry Potter movies or books at all this is a fun game to get together and play with friends or family. The card questions and video clip questions range in difficulty and variety. You never know what to expect to be asked so it makes it more entertaining. My favorite questions are the "Muggle" questions where they ask about the actors and their lifes. It's pretty fun. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who has seen the movies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun But Misleading, January 31, 2009

My daughter is only 7 and loves Harry Potter, thanks to her mom who LOVED the books. We have two Harry Potter board games. The first one is a lot like Trivial Pursuit. This means you must be able to read well. The second game is the same only it follows an odd Quidditch Match format. She is always asking me to play these games. I happened to see this game on a store shelf and thought this would be perfect for her. For the most part this is correct. I have one problem with it: One of the question categories is "Muggles." It asks questions about the lives of the actors who portray the characters in the movie. As they are all British we have trouble answering them. And those are the questions my daughter always seems to get! I wish they would've kept the questions strictly within the confines of the Harry Potter movies or books. There are some really cute questions on the DVD part of the game. And they certainly can be answered by a seven year old.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun But Somewhat Frustrating, November 11, 2008

I was very excited to find this for sale because my girlfriend and I had been looking for it for quite some time in every store we entered. We are both big fans of the Harry Potter books and the Harry Potter movies. I have read them all twice and she has read them all at least 3 times, and we own all 5 movies.

However, playing the game can be a bit of a trying experience. Many of the questions are simply too obscure. Perhaps they are aimed at the totally obsessed Potterphiles. Or maybe I am just too confident in my knowledge of things to admit that I'm not very good at this game. Either way, many of the questions are related to the names of actors who play minor roles, or about the slightest production details that only someone who is completely obsessed with everything Potter would have the slightest chance to know. Obviously, if the questions are too easy the game is no fun, but the same goes for when many of them are simply impossible.

Still, the game is fun to play for the most part, and as long as you go in prepared to be absolutely clueless on a large chunk of the questions, you can still enjoy it.

I would recommend this only for fairly hardcore Potter fans, though, as casual players will likely be very much in the dark on much of the content. It seems that just having seen the movies is not enough.

If you already know a lot about the Harry Potter movies and books, this game will be interesting and fun for you. If you know "some" about the HP series, this game will probably just frustrate you. My 9-yr-old has read all the books, seen all the movies, but is not able to successfully do many of the puzzles. It is a challenging game, mainly for teens and up, I would say, as far as difficulty. We enjoy playing "Party mode" best, as it doesn't take as long. Scoring is all on the honor system. I consider myself a pretty huge Potter fan, but still couldn't answer many of the questions regarding the actors and such.

This is a great game. We actually have 3 "scene it" games, and this one is played the most. Our 10 and 13 year old girls love it. It's one of the few games that both my wife and I really enjoy playing with the kids. It looks great on the 42" plasma, and it doesn't get boring!

2.0 out of 5 stars SHOULD be fun... but way too easy, December 1, 2010

Yes, these Scene It games seem like a great concept, but especially for the Harry Potter editions, it fails. After all, there are a certain amount of books and movies (and the Scene It's seem to mostly rely on movies and somewhat one books, no more outside information), and most people who will be interested in playing it are Harry Potter junkies, who have most likely viewed/read all the movies and books. The Scene-It questions are simply too easy; the only people who may find it challenging are Harry Potter novices who haven't seen/read all the movies and books. In fact, the Scene It is so easy that, combined with it's slow transition speed due to flashy transitions, it become downright boring. Yes, I applaud the creation of this Scene-It series and I understand that the questions CAN'T be too difficult, but for most people who would even buy the game, it's too easy and not worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scene It? Harry Potter Deluxe Edition, February 15, 2010

We have one of the earlier, generic versions of Scene It - Scene Jr., I believe. We've enjoyed it and were ready to try a new and different version. We've only played this one once so far but were a bit disappointed. The questions/clips don't give enough frame of reference for the player to "fill in the blank". For example, the question might be what character has been removed from the scene. You see a costume from the shoulder (not chest) to the neck with the head removed. You are given no clue as to which movie you are in and the time allowed to respond is brief. It becomes a guessing game rather than a challenge.
