An indispensable reference book for all theatre techies !,
By
This review is from: Scene Design and Stage Lighting (Hardcover)
Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.

Invaluable guide for novices and professionals,
By Michael S Brown (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews

I can't tell you how often I've found myself saying "I'm a carpenter, not a designer!" when asked to design a set. I've always muddled through, but now, with this book in hand, I've found 100% more confidence in my designs. Invaluable for the lighting designer who wants to better understand scenic design, and for the scenic designer who wants to understand lighting design. Buy it!

Book was required for Scene Design and Stagecraft course at school. I am no where near finished with it, as the class has just started, but already I feel like I'm learning a lot about the construction portion of the book.
Book was in great condition upon purchase, and came in before the class so that is a bonus as well.

I am a Scenic Designer and found this book to very informative. It gives the basic information for someone getting started in theatre. This book is not for people that are looking for designer profiles and the best designs in concept. It is for beginners breaking down all the info you would need to know about theatre and getting started in Scenic and Lighting Design. The biggest positive for me it that the book contains mostly designs that I haven't seen in any other design books. The designs are from more regional designers as apposed to world renowned designers. It's always nice to have new things to be inspired by.
I bought the book used and it was worth it for the new inspiration.

A Great Start,
This review is from: Scene Design and Stage Lighting (Hardcover)
This book is extremely helpful for those just starting off in the designing world of lights and set design/construction. It contains a wide variety of things you would want to know about designing and how they correspond with other areas of design. However if you are looking for a more specialized book in a certain field, I'd look elsewhere. This has all the basics to get you started or for a better understanding of other fields and how they correlate with what you are focused on. For example it has great ideas and suggestions as to how a lighting designer and set designer work together to create the overall look they are both going for.
