5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing change from some Red Dwarf books, March 19, 2011
By
Magic Lemur (Somewhere in Madagascar) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scenes from the Dwarf (Penguin 60s) (Paperback)
Anyone who reads Penguin 60s might know that often they are a sample of a writers works from a larger books (e.g. Seven Yorkshire Tales being from a larger James Herriot collection).
Furthermore, if you've read any of the Red Dwarf books, you will know that they tend to be expanded versions of Red Dwarf episodes (e.g. Better Than Life was a TV episode as well as being a full novel).

What is refreshing about this book, though, is that it is neither of these things. What it is is a collection of unpublished scripts from the TV series, most of which will be unfamiliar to Red Dwarf fans and are actually a bit of a treat for people who've watched the series.

To give you an idea of what's in this book, here is a sentence-summary of each story:
1. 'Camille' - Lister is avidly trying to teach Kryten how to lie.
2. 'Quarantine' - The crew are quarantined by a slightly insane Rimmer.
3. 'The Last Day' - Kryten is a condemned man having been out-moded by a superior model.
4. 'Emo Hawk' - The crew encounter a space probe bent on their destruction.
5. 'Timeslides' - Lister tries to persuade his past-self that he may not make it as a rockstar!
6. 'Holoship' - One of the best stories as Rimmer discovers enlightened holograms who regard love-making as a trivial pastime.
7. 'Kryten' - The episode where the crew meet Kryten - familiar but still fun.
8. 'Out of time' - One of my favourite episodes where the crew keep encountering 'unreality bubbles' - this one is where the crew discover Lister is a droid.

So, although the selection isn't all fresh, unreleased material, a fair percentage is and this book is a 1/2 hour read at most, with each story being less than 10 pages.
Of course, Red Dwarf are usually very generous to their fans, and their novels, although slightly unoriginal in part, are generally a good read.
If you haven't got into reading the novels, then this is a good place to start. If you have, then this provides a few extra morsels to enjoy.
