Editorial Reviews

Review

"The ink drawings are a day in the life of Bianjing from its outskirts to the heart of the city. It starts on the banks of the river, enters the town, and ends with the watchtower. You'd have to squint at the original to see all this detail, if you got a chance to see the scroll at all. This book is a delight."—McClatchy News Service

For a Chinese, nothing is more significant than "Scences along the River during the Qingming Festival" in Chinese art history. As a icon, you must read it if you are interested in Chinese art history.

As a Chinese, I know so many historic stories/events related to this scroll. Unfortunately, based on my own experience, I've never see such a publication like this in China, as far as its detailed and comprehensive explanation on the painting itself and seals. If you ask a Chinese about this scroll, I believe 99% of them will answer Yes; but if you ask what was in there, I bet very few of them can give you an answer. Probably Chinese in history(even today), are not good at disassemble an art work into pieces, and analyze its aesthetic and social themes, as most west scholars.

One disappointment: to me, the image quality of the book is not as clear as I thought to be. I am not sure if that is due to the quality of the original paint or the press. I personally think that the press provides the best quality they can.

Other than that, the book is a excellent book and worth to purchase.

This is a fabulous book which includes a full layout of the original painting in a folding insert. I got it for my brothers for Christmas since we're descendants of the Soong dynasty. We didn't know much about Chinese artwork before discovering this classic and famous painting.

This is a lovely book which is a copy of the scroll with annotations showing exactly what is represented in every scene. It also shows the comments on the back of the scroll from its many owners. This should be a 'must have'for anyone who is interested in Chinese history.

The book was sent to Germany from the U.S. without an invoice properly fixed on the outer side of the parcel. It cost me three hours and additional € 6 to receive the item from the tax agency - an item which I had paid for already. Never again shall I purchase this way nor recommend to others to do so.
The book by the way is excellent.
