Solid, but occasionally heavy and slow, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Schütz: Musikalische Exequien / Johannes-Passion (Audio CD)
Ehmann gets a good sound from his voices thoughout. I like his practice of using brass to double the choral sections in the "Musikalische Exequien", and he mentions a personal note of Schütz that the violone (similar to the modern double bass violin) was an indispensible part of that music. Of course a solid bass line has always been important to German music in any style period. Occasionally, Ehmann runs things a little slow, which makes it sound just a little heavy at times. Overall, it is a good recording, better than most, only slightly below the Mauersberger.
