Building it is actually pretty fun.

As a great place to start and a probable place to end your exposure to the world of weaving this is a very small investment in understanding the world around you.

I bought my Cricket about 3 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed weaving scarves mostly on this cute loom. Schacht may call this a "student" but I would say it is for anyone between the ages of 8 and 98 - even younger with a little adult help. Direct warping using a warping peg (included in purchase) is very easy and quick once you do it a few times. There are a number of videos on You Tube to help you learn to warp and weave.

The Schacht Company quality is superb, easy to assemble, and start weaving right away. You won't be disappointed in this cute little rigid heddle loom - until you need a big brother for it, the Schacht Flip!

This Schacht Cricket Student Loom has everything you need for your first exposure to weaving. This is not a toy and may prove to be a lot more fun than any toy you have in mind. Schacht produces many professional loans and as you can see put great thought into this basic startup rigid heddle loom.

Everything you need to get started is in this one kit. Do not let the technical terms for all the different bits and bobs put you off as you will soon be rattling off things such as rigid heddle, reed, and shuttle, and so forth.

As a great place to start and a probable place to end your exposure to the world of weaving this is a very small investment in understanding the world around you. You will run across looms of various types as you read stories and see films of other cultures throughout the world.

Again, this makes a great starting off place. So if you are not personally inclined to take the time and energy be sure to expose your children as soon as they are old enough to reach the table. Speaking of children, this loom makes a great Christmas gift; or, if you are so inclined, a great unbirthday present.

Because beginner projects do not need large quantities of yarn, I suggest that you start off with something that is high quality and sturdy enough to stand up to the first experiments. These can be saved and shown to their children.

I got this loom from my Grandma as a gift because I love weaving. I had a different loom that was called a Frame loom. I liked it but I thought that it was a bit small and you could not make very long projects on it either. But on this loom, you can make much longer projects and you can make them wider too. First of all, setting it up is a little bit hard. I learned that part from my Grandma. It comes with a special hook you use to pull all the threads onto a metal loop that you attatch to a table or a wooden bench. I got some help on this step. Then, you have to tie some knots that keep all the threads in place. Finally, the loom is ready for some serious weaving! You slide the shuttle back and forth between a gap that you make when you lift a a little spacer. You can also wind up your weaving so you can make it really long. Building it is actually pretty fun. You can build it in less than an hour. I have trouble taking my weaving off the loom. The instructions are not very good for that part. Otherwise, the instructions are pretty good. But most off all, its when your done, you have brand new piece of clothing! Have fun!

I received this loom as a gift when I mentioned wanting to learn to weave, and I love it! It's a fantastic loom to learn on. The instructions that come with it are clear and concise, the beginner's project doesn't get any simpler, and putting it together is a breeze. It is very lightweight, and I carry it with me when I'm waiting at school to pick up my daughter. It's very simple to use and there are other reeds available to buy besides the 8 dent it comes with.
