Book Description

December 20, 2011
What can a triangle tell us about love? In Schematics: A Love Story, author Julian Hibbard uses schematic diagrams to meditate on love, memory, and the way time links them. Every spread of the book pairs a quietly unfolding, enigmatic narrative with a visually arresting illustration drawn from old diagrams. Whether they illustrate simplistic dance steps or chart the process of chemical decomposition, the illustrations play off the text, coaxing out new hints of meaning from what at first glance appears simple. As the story unfolds, the schematics draw readers in, revealing more and more of the paradox that is love. Schematics includes an index explaining the sources of the original diagrams, adding another layer of intrigue to this short but memorable fiction.

The book was by a photographer that I am a fan of; but, the project was a departure from his photography, It is well put together and an affordable addition to my library, The format is similar to his book "The Noir A-Z" in which definitions are compared to an image, except in the case of Schematics, diagrams take the place of photographs and poems takes the place of definitions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A visual poem April 17, 2013

Read a page...think it through. This is a book to have somewhere where you will be enticed to open it as you pass, to any page, and let that thought wander around your head for awhile. A great inspiration starter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schematics February 1, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Quirky, poetic, full of intrigue, and well-documented, Schematics: A Love Story is more of a photo album than a book. Each page has a schematic on the left side and a sentence or two on the right. The pages are thick paperboard. At the back is a description of each diagram and what it means. I'm sure that the text is full of connections to the schematic drawings, but I haven't had it long enough to look at it carefully.
