4.0 out of 5 stars Nice unit for much less than the competition.
The Tiger2000 is a nice compromise for the budget conscious folks who want a quality wet sharpener. For the cost of this unit and all the jigs you could dream of it is very possible your costs would still be less than that other "glamor" sharpener.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent machine, but could be a LOT better.
I ordered this machine by mistake, I meant to order the 10" version (the 2500), but this 8" version gets the job done. I refuse to pay $500 for the Tormek, and this machine does me fine.

It has the power needed to sharpen the gouge and skew just fine. Once you get your tools at the proper angle (use a high speed grinder for that!) this machine will EASILY...

The Tiger2000 is a nice compromise for the budget conscious folks who want a quality wet sharpener. For the cost of this unit and all the jigs you could dream of it is very possible your costs would still be less than that other "glamor" sharpener.

Most of the Jet and Tormek jigs will work on this machine and the only one that for sure doesn't is the planer/jointer knife jig. Rikon is the distributer for Scheppach in the US and is helpful should you have any questions.
The unit does have a smaller grinding wheel than the Jet and Tormek but for most folks in a hobby shop the life of the stone will be fairly long regardless.
The units motor is adequate for the task it is designed to do.
The tool rests clamp firmly in place and hold your jigs securely to ensure a solid sharpening surface.

I would recommend this unit to anyone who is considering buying a high priced wet grinder but having trouble swallowing the inflated price.

4.0 out of 5 stars good product, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Scheppach Tiger 2000 1 Amp Vertical Wheel Wet Grinding/Sharpening System (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a good sharpener. I have never used the tormek so I can't vouch for it but this is a good product. It put an edge on a set of chisels that I had relegated to glue duty. can't wait to see what it can do for a set of 12" planer knives.
The manual is lacking however.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not a Tormek, but..., January 30, 2007
This review is from: Scheppach Tiger 2000 1 Amp Vertical Wheel Wet Grinding/Sharpening System (Tools & Home Improvement)
Well I've never owned a Tormek, so it's hard to make a direct comparison, but the Scheppach is almost half the price. I have not used it exstensively, but my impressions are all good. The chisels that I've sharpened and honed on it are sharper then they've ever been before, the set-up was quick and easy, and the machine seems sturdy and runs quietly.

The main drawback I've seen is the quality of the jigs, and the almost complete absence of english instructions. Though I'm pretty sure, due to the similarity of the machines, that Tormek jigs will work on the Scheppach. I have yet to test this though.

Overall, when you factor in the money saved, I am happy with the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value in Slow Speed Wet Grinder, October 3, 2008
By

This review is from: Scheppach Tiger 2000 1 Amp Vertical Wheel Wet Grinding/Sharpening System (Tools & Home Improvement)
Having frustrated myself with sandpaper sharpening ("scary sharp method") and hand honing using waterstones, I first tried a regular grinder to get my chisels and plane irons in shape. But it was hit or miss in that effort; you have to be careful not to heat up the edge too much, and the narrow wheel would sharpen unevenly. Slow speed wet grinders solve both those problems by providing a larger width wheel, rotating at a slower speed and using a cooling water bath.

Among these units, the Scheppach Tiger 2000 is an incredible value. For the price, from one-third to one-quarter the price of a Tormek unit, you do compromise a bit. The wheel is a bit narrower, at about 1.75" wide instead of 2", and it has a smaller diameter at 8" instead of 10". And I understand the motor does not have as much torque (but in practice, that has not been a problem for me). For my occasional use, these compromises are well worth the reduced price.

Setup was easy, but like another commenter, I had to file a small nib off the tool rest to get it to fit into the holes on top of the unit. The instructions are too brief; while I was able to figure everything out, some usage instructions would be nice. I had to play around a bit with the included jig for chisels and plane irons.

I am very happy with the Tiger 2000. I can get a consistent, sharp edge, and I'm working through my collection of 40+ year old chisels and plane irons, getting them in shape. I find sharpening on the grinding wheel easy enough, then a short treatment on the leather stropping wheel brings out a mirror-bright, very sharp edge. A quick flattening of the back on a fine stone and retouching the leather stropping wheel gives me an edge that will cut hairs off the back of my hand very easily.

For under $200 Scheppach 2000 is a very good machine
for hobbyists. I use Jet and Tormek jigs without
any problem. Because of its similarity with Tormek and
Jet sharpeners, you can join their news groups to ask
questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A product of value, October 19, 2007
This review is from: Scheppach Tiger 2000 1 Amp Vertical Wheel Wet Grinding/Sharpening System (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Scheppach Tiger is truly a product of value. Although this machine is
smaller than the Tormek or the new Jet ( very similar to Tormek ) it will
perform very well against both.

The cost consideration is well taken in making this purchase as it is $100.00 less in cost in both cases. However, it will serve the buyer well
in performance.

Accessories: please note that the Tormek and Jet accessories will work very well on the Scheppach machine. Jet has added several accessories which add additional flexibility in the sharpening process.

It is a very well made product of German manufacture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent machine, but could be a LOT better., August 10, 2008

I ordered this machine by mistake, I meant to order the 10" version (the 2500), but this 8" version gets the job done. I refuse to pay $500 for the Tormek, and this machine does me fine.

It has the power needed to sharpen the gouge and skew just fine. Once you get your tools at the proper angle (use a high speed grinder for that!) this machine will EASILY sharpen them enough to shave with-- I do it every time I sharpen my skew. The honing wheel will cake up on you fairly easily, though.

The toolrest posts did not fit in their holes at all, I had to use a drill bit to ream them out a 64th" bigger. The water tub came in cracked, but I just epoxied it and it's fine. These two reasons alone prevent me from giving it a 4 or 5 star.

A week after I ordered this machine, the Grizzly clone showed up in their catalog for only a few dollars more in the 10" version (look at the grinding wheel on the Grizzly-- it says "2500" and I'm pretty sure it the exact same machine as the Sheppach. Had I known this I would have waited and got the Grizzly.

Then again, my sharp chisels aren't complaining much!

If you don't get the nut tight enough the grind wheel will come loose when you put pressure on it, so it would have been better to have the shaft and nut threaded the other way but other than that I'm happy with the overall quality of the machine.

$119.99 at WoodCraft brick and mortor stores. Not available on the web site. I find only good reviews for this but have not tried it yet. The instruction manual is odd to say the least. But it is sufficient. Since the price is right, buy at WoodCraft! But hurry!

Edit 10/16/09
This thing works great! Sharpens my chisels razor sharp. I love it more than my wife!

Good sharpener for the money. The wheel is smaller than other sharpeners but for a hobbyist it should be fine. The tool mount bar has no micro adjustable dial so setting angles takes a little more time. The packaged angle setting jig isn't as versatile as the Tormek's, after the wheel is ground down over time the jig which register's only for a 8" wheel won't register correct angles. The instructions supplied don't do a very good job of describing grinding technique. And the tool clamp isn't as nice as other manufacture's. All that said for little over a hundred dollars the machine will do a fine job on a variety of tools, and you can always outfit the machine with higher quality jigs for less money than other manufacture's base price.
