Book Description

June 5, 2012 Metropolitan Museum of Art

Although separated by time, Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli—both Italian, both feminists—share striking affinities in terms of their design strategies and fashion manifestoes. Presented as an intimate "conversation," Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations aims to tease out formal and conceptual similarities between the two designers. Striking photographs and insightful texts illustrate the parallels between the two, including their preferences for interesting textiles and prints, eccentric color palettes, and a bold and playful approach to styling and accessories.

Schiaparelli, in the 1920s through 50s, and Prada, from the late 1980s to today, exploited the narrative possibilities of prints, sought out unconventional textiles, played with ideas of good and bad taste, and manipulated scale for surrealistic outcomes. Contemporary art plays a major role in the work of these inventive women—Schiaparelli in her famous collaborations with Dali and Cocteau, and Prada via her Fondazione Prada. Blending the historic with the contemporary, the catalogue brings the masterworks of both designers together into a grand conversation between the most important women fashion designers to ever emerge from Italy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations May 8, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another beautiful publication from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I've to admit I'm no Prada fan but I was attracted to this book on the prospect of having a chance to view some of Schiaparelli's beautiful creations.
This attractive book exceeded my expectations, it is beautifully bound and loaded with artistic fashion photography.
The photos present a mixture of clear archival images depicting Schiaparelli's elegant garments juxtaposed with colorful images from modern Prada collections. Each photo has captions revealing their respective dates.
The text in the book is concise, there is a brief introduction at the beginning of the book, then there are several booklets scattered between the images and they reproduce several comments by both ladies explaining their sources of inspiration, techniques, and their approach to creative design. The booklets may also contain some small photos, close-ups, or sketches. The layout of those pamphlets is nice as they don't affect the beauty of the illustrations and they are printed on high-quality paper.
This is a fine addition to any fashion and photography collection as it is both insightful and visually attractive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful May 30, 2012

I went to the Schiaparelli & Prada exhibit @ The Met, I thought it was a stunning and highly interesting exhibit. The works on view are arranged into seven themes: "Waist Up/Waist Down," "Ugly Chic," "Hard Chic," "Naďf Chic," "The Classical Body," "The Exotic Body," and "The Surreal Body." As you enter there is a collection of Schiaparelli jackets that are stunning besides Prada skirts, opposite is an amazing collection of Schiaparelli hats accompanied by Prada shoes, then then you move on to a room that firt showcases "hard chic", "Naif Chic" Last is a room of mirrors.. All along are videos of Prada and an actress who plays Schiaparelli talking, you really get a feel and understand these two great women.
The book is $50 @ The Met, it is a real bargain on here. The book is a must have for anyone who enjoyed the exhibit, it is beautifully and artistically done.
