1.0 out of 5 stars Schiff changs MegaRed formula.
We had been using Schiff MegaRed Original formula with genuine NKO (Neptune Krill Oil) for a long while with excellent results. Really miss the old MegaRed with Neptune Krill Oil.

I am a physician. I was on lipitor for about 4 years until I found out it was giving me rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The manufacturers of statins state that this is a rare side effect and I even counselled my patients that this is about a 1/200 incidence. Well after delving into the research a bit more it turns out that pretty much everyone taking statins has some degree of muscle pathology on biopsy, with the majority being subclinical...but not insignificant. Being a work-out nut this could not be tolerated.

I stopped the Lipitor and went on a low fat diet (20% fat) with Mega Red. To be fair I am also taking a proprietary 3-6-9 omega oil blend as well (Udo's Blend) although it is not clear that this affects cholesterol levels and makes no claims to. I have been on the Mega Red for about 2 months and the low fat diet for about 2 weeks and got my levels rechecked. Total cholesterol went from 240 (pre-lipitor) to 179. LDL from 160 to 119 and HDL from 35 to 40. All as good or better than I got on 20 mg of Lipitor.

Now I no longer have to worry about muscle breakdown and my LFT's are normal for the first time in 4 years. As an added bonus I can get this locally for about $27 for a 4-month supply (with coupon and buy-1-get-1 deals) which is about 1/4 the cost of Lipitor. Well this is one anecdotal success story so take it for what it's worth. I have put a lot of energy into exercizing and going low fat as well so under those circumstances I can say that it seems to work for me andI am very happy with the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sceptic doctor turned believer, June 3, 2009
This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I bought this for my mom a heart patient who must take fish oil daily. Her doctor told her to stick with the fish oil and not this he didn't know anything about it. But she changed her regimine because she was tired of taking six fish oil capsules a day. After a few months she had her blood work redone and he doctor couldn't believe how well it came back and told her to keep doing whatever she was doing because it was working. He also wrote down what she was using so he could recommend it to his patients instead of so many fish oil capsules a day. Not only did she reduce the number of pills she is taking daily but it showed better improvement in her blood work numbers than the fish oil had.

These Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 softgels are definately a keeper. Absolutely no aftertaste at all!!! The aftertaste was my biggest problem with other omega-3 fish oil softgels-made me sick in the stomach. The Schiff softgels are tiny, which is great for anyone who has difficulties with large size capsules/softgels. I love these and highly recommend =)

5.0 out of 5 stars krill, April 12, 2008
This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
Product is difficult to find in retail and was easily found through amazon. Was recommended by a doctor to try in the aid of lowering cholestral, and I, a person who cannot tolerate taking fish oil because of the size of the pill, let alone 3-6 a day, find Mega Red Krill sized right and easy, taking only 1 pill daily. Priced right and delivered efficiently.

This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I was shopping price for this product (originally purchased at Costco) and noted the review that spoke about side effects. I've been taking this daily for the last 6 months and have had no side-effects of any kind. So, if this is the product you want, do not assume that it will cause side effects based on the one negative review.

5.0 out of 5 stars MegaRed lowers triglycerides, July 7, 2010
This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I have been on 10 mg of Lipitor daily for about three years now and along with Lipitor have been taking several vitamin supplements and an Omega3 fish oil supplement. While my total cholesterol went down from 205 to 130, my triglyceride level would remain a problem, never going below 220 until recently when I switched to 300 mg of MegaRed daily. After 6 months on MegaRed my triglyceride level is 145 and I have had no side effects whatsoever. I heartily recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Won't be without these!, November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
My family has been taking these regularly for nearly a year now with no adverse effects and many very obvious benefits. Before using these, we'd been using Carlon's Cod Liver Oil liquid (plain and lemon) and we also tried various flax oil and "vegetarian" EFA supplements. These have been the most obviously helpful with none of the annoying issues that came up with other products (like fishy burps). I take between 2-4 a day, divided and with meals. I've had long term issues with dry irritated skin, cracked heals, and many other EFA deficiency related issues. I'm also diabetic and have PCOS. When I take these the aforementioned symptoms disappear and my blood sugar bounces around much less. I've also had a significant reduction in ovarian pain from the PCOS when taking these. I'm a lifelong vegan/ova-lacto vegetarian and these are helping me meet many of the deficiencies that this kind of diet can produce (yes, I know these are an animal product so pls don't comment and tell me that!). The number one reason I won't be w/o these, however is the profound effect they have on my mood. I'm highly prone to melancholy and depression. However, since starting these my moods have radically stabilized. I know it's these because whenever I run out I notice the depression issues returning with a vengeance. It takes a few days back on these to level back out, but I always do. I'm an extremely skeptical person - so I have tested this hypothesis repeatedly with always the same results. This is definitely not a placebo effect, because as a vegetarian I'd rather not be using an animal product.

...

The reason I don't give these five stars is because of the ridiculous inclusion of artificial vanilla flavor and sorbitol in the tabs. These are so ridiculously unnecessary and I hope Schiff will take them out.

Also to the reviewers who have mentioned Mercola brand and Neptune Krill Oil, I suggest you do research on where and how krill is sourced and the company practices of Neptune. The krill in these tabs is from the Superba company and after researching the source/production issue I personally believe Superba's practices are substantially superior.

5.0 out of 5 stars krill vs. fish oil, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
My whole family have been taking MegaRed Krill Oil everyday for more than a year. I don't want to cite specific numbers as this is not a scientific study, but both my cholesteral and my wife's triglyceride levels have been improved to acceptable levels during this time.

However, the main reason for this review is to share some information about why this 300mg krill oil capsule is enough for a day when it takes 1000mg or more with fish oil. I had been wondering about this for some time and finally I googled it and found the following answer. You can find more details on "why fish oil is not the best omega-3 source" on healthiertalk but the following are some excerpts from the article:

"...fish oil is highly perishable. You have to have sufficient antioxidants to ensure that the fish oil doesn't oxidize and become rancid inside your body...(Krill oil) is superior to fish oil because it contains phospholipids, antioxidants (more than 47 times the levels found in fish oil!), and omega-3's bonded together in a way that keeps them safe from oxidation, and makes them easily absorbed in your body. So with krill oil, you can ensure that you're getting these incredibly healthy fats (EPA and DHA)"

The article also mentioned common contaminants found in fish and some interesting differences in farm raised salmon, corn fed cattles and plant based Omega-3s.

Note: I want to mention that I do not know the author of the article, nor do I know for sure the credibility of the content. I simply googled the information and found it makes sense to me.

This review is from: Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil 300 mg - 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I was pleased to find the MegaRed Krill Oil on Amazon.com It was a larger quantity than what I could get at local stores and quite a bit less expensive. It shipped right a way. I will order again. There were several companies to choose from so I had to do some comparitive shopping, but it sure was easier from my computer than driving around in bad weather to several stores. I go for a cholestorol check in a week, so I'm hoping to find a better HDL/LDL. I noticed that several people wrote a negative review because MegaRed contains Sorbitol. I am especially sensitive to artificial sweetners, but this product doesn't bother me at all.
