I bought this on August 15 and amazon had it delivered to my door on August 17.

The exterior escutcheon plate did not cover the exterior mounting plate and caused a gap between it at the door which could lead to water infiltration.

I contacted Schlage for warranty service and spoke to Deborah Acosta on August 16. I explained to her my situation and she wanted photos of the defect. I did not hear anything back from her for a few days.

On August 20, I asked amazon for a replacement. They had it delivered to me next day!

The replacement had the same problem as the original purchase but not as severe. I sanded down the exterior mounting plate and the escutcheon plate finally sat flush with the door. The replacement also had a lot burrs inside from the metal molding process that were not trimmed off. It also did not come with the 9V battery. I believe I received the two locks from a bad batch and lazy quality control.

As of August 23, Deborah Acosta of Allegion (parent company of Schlage) still has not contacted me.

I still recommend buying this item because after you get it installed and properly flush to your door, it has a lot of good features:

1) I like the fact that it is a manual turn keypad lock. In other words, you still have to lock or unlock it manually after entering in the pass code. It does not automatically lock and unlock the door for you. I figure that the less motorized parts, the less chance of failure.
2) It's convenient when you need to lock it from the outside because it's smart enough to know that you're trying to lock the door, you just need to press the Schlage button, and turn to lock.
3) Convenience of not having to remember and take keys out.

The two most common hole sizes in the U.S. and Canada are 1 1/2" and 2 1/8". This is a nice product, the instructions are straightforward. However, it requires a 2-1/8" mounting hole. If you are using it to replace a deadbolt, check your hole size. Mine was a standard 1/1-2" deadbolt (2-1/8" is standard for door knobs). Thus, you need to bore out the hole in the door if you have a deadbolt hole.

I can't go 5 stars on this because of what happened when the first battery failed on the first one I purchased. When the battery goes dead you better have the key! Mine worked perfectly right up until the day it died, but the day it did, I came very close to being locked out of my house! It may have been a fluke but I got no warning that the battery was about to die. I managed to get it to engage after about 4 or 5 attempts and that was the very last time it did anything until I changed out the battery. So here is a little free advice, "Keep a key somewhere!" and I don't mean 'locked in the house', Obviously, replacing the battery annually would be a good idea but that still means access to your house depends on a $2 battery. So ... I repeat. "Keep a key somewhere!"

[This is an addendum to clarify my initial remarks.]
I'm a little puzzled as to why some people are marking my review as `unhelpful' and can only assume that people think I'm not very knowledgeable about the way the device works. I assure you I am. According to the instructional guide, the lock is supposed to give enough warning time to keep the resident from being locked out. Prior to going completely dead it should first begin to react slowly and give an audible high/low beep. The problem is that batteries don't always fail `slowly'. They can experience a rapid power drop if they are shorting out internally (from corrosion). I suspect that is what happened to me because that original battery failed only about a year after I first installed the lock, meanwhile ... the battery I replaced it with is going on THREE years now!
The sole reason that I wrote the original review above was to simple caution people that getting locked out is a possibility (not a likelihood).

I have had this on my door for quite a while and today I realized that I could open the door without entering the code. Turns out that in the instructions, one of the drawings is marked "caution". I had to go to the Schlage site to find the faq about this issue. Turns out that if you don't quite understand the cryptic diagram marked "caution", the lock will appear to work but actually let anyone in just by touching the Schage button. Please check your installation for the safety of your family; Just touch the big Schage button and make sure you don't hear the mechanism click. If you do, you have a problem.

You may see this as acceptable: I had a new door installed with one of these deadbolts 4 years ago (almost exactly -- thank you Amazon for your records). I replaced the battery about six months ago. Yesterday evening, I was headed out and couldn't lock the door -- the turnbolt just went around and around -- didn't engage the lock mechanism at all. I'm a techie so I went thru their website, looking for any likely culprits. Wasn't the battery, wasn't the cam - reset that as per the instructions. From what I can tell, it's a broken wire that isn't sending the info from the turnbolt to the bolt. From what I can see on Schlage's website, they don't sell parts, make parts, or expect to repair when that happens. From my perspective, I expected a Schlage to last my lifetime in this house. Ok, granted, adding electronics changes that some, but no, I wasn't expecting this. And, granted, I have no idea where the key is 4 yrs later. So do I have a locksmith make a key or just replace it? -- me, I replace it.

Will their warranty replace or refund? I am not sure I care.

I look at all the other nifty new technology they have and frankly, can I justify the risk of needing to replace it in 3 to 4 yrs? Well, I'm going to try another company first, see if I can find a better quality product or a better warranty, that's for sure.

I'm so disappointed.
