My husband is a woodworker by hobby. He found these latches a couple of years ago,and they work great. He uses them on larger projects and they latch down tight and hold firm.He will not use any other kind when he needs this sorta latch. They are highly recommended if this is the one you need.

Always cheaper than buying a new lock and dealing with matching keys a replacement latch can come in handy. These combination kits handle the two modern common backsets; 2 3/8 and 2 3/4 inch automatically. No parts to fiddle with. It will work if your door has an edge mortise (cavity) with square, rounded edges as well as if your door only has a one inch hole. This model number is for interior doors only! This image is actually a #40-251 used for exteriors doors for more security from forced entry. The finished plate easily pries off to adapt the latch for your door configuration. Examine the original latch and configure the new latch to look like it. If it is the type that goes in the one inch hole use a block of wood to protect it as you hammer it flush. More than one person has driven the latch home to find they have it in 180 degrees wrong and will bounce off the strike instead of wedging shut as it should so take a close look before you pick up the hammer. I wouldn't know any of these folks, ahmm. The plate type should be installed first and screws replaced. Holes stripped out? A piece of 1/8 inch dowel or similar driven in first can really help secure the latch. Ensure that it ends up even with the door edge then reassemble the rest of the lock and tighten the screws snugly. There is not much to it really. If it does not fix your problem insure your door is not sagging from a hinge issue and that the strike plate is correctly aligned and securely installed. Schlage makes a good quality economical product in this line and this latch is no different. It is a well designed solution for anyone that is handy and should provide years of service when properly installed. When I replaced my locks I went with this series and have installed these professionally for several decades. They get my vote.
