My son (OK, "we") have several of the Schleich toys though "toy" doesn't really do justice to the quality of these figures. And this one is one of the best.

First of all, it is absolutely huge. My son (OK, "we") has several "large" creatures--dragons, another gryphon, dinosaurs, etc.--but this one really dwarfs them all. It's certainly expensive (more on that later), but in terms of size, I'd say you're getting pretty good value.

Secondly, it feel/looks quite sturdy. Based on our experience with other Schleich, it's hard to imagine it not holding up. These things can take a beating as my son and his friend (OK, sometimes "me") wage war on each other, smashing them into one another, catapulting all sorts of things at them, dropping them, and so on. None have ever been damaged. The only concern one might have with regard to this one is the wing joints, as any sort of moving part is going to be more vulnerable, but it appears, as I said, to be sturdily built.

the detail, as usual with Schleich, is sharp and vivid, whether it be the paint, the small designs on the the shield, the little magnet that holds the knight in, the sharpness of the talons, etc.

There's no doubt Schleich is pricey. And it's a fair question whether they are worth the price. I'd say the answer will simply vary from person to person. But certainly one can't say you're paying a high price for "cheap" goods. These will last kids a long, long time and I would imagine last through several generations as well.

I have two children and we own a lot of Schleich, including figures from the knight series. This is by far our finest piece. We have Schleich dragons, but none of them compare to this.

In the box, the figure does not give the impression of its full size. Once out of the box, the massive wings can unfurl and they are HUGE. The wings of the eagle move and pose quite nicely. This is definitely one of the more beautifully crafted pieces we have with excellent detail on the painting and mold. Our other Schleich figurines that sit on animals are frustrating, but this one has a magnet just strong enough to hold the knight in place during play.

Absolutely outstanding. Definitely an heirloom piece your child will pass on. It is beautiful and highly detailed with endless play and display value.

My son, (10) really loves this. He was really thrilled with the size and coloring of the Griffin.
It is of substantial weight and the craftsmanship is wonderfully detailed. The knight sits on the
Griffin which is slightly magnatized- he stays on but there isn't any real pull to take him off. The knght is not poseable but
the spear can be removed from his hand.
The wings move up and down and fold in a little which makes the wings closer to the body.
Even my middle aged teen daughter loved this, I still think she is trying to bribe my son for it, lol.
Not only is this a toy but it is quite a deorative piece to enhance my son's room. I think too, any collector
of these pieces will be very happy.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
In the past year I've purchased nearly two dozen figures manufactured by Schleich, Papo-France and Safari LTD. One (a unicorn) will go to my 5 year old granddaughter at Christmas but the rest stay with me for now, and I only let my grandchildren (the other one is a 3 year old boy) play with them when I'm also playing with them, so I can supervise. And this is because all of these fine figures are fairly high quality, relatively breakable, collectible figures (and because my grandson is, well, a boy who loves to find out how things go together by taking them apart, even if they aren't meant to be taken apart...). It's also because I'm 61 going on 11 or something like that, but someday I'll pass them on to the grandkids.

Schleich is a German company, though its figures, including this one, are manufactured in China (as are Papo and Safari figures). Of the three companies (Schleich, Papo and Safari), Schleich's figures are, I would say, the most sophisticated, in terms of style, design and overall quality (though I consider Papo and Safari figures to be very high quality as well).

I've uploaded photos of the Griffin Rider to this page that will hopefully give you a sense of just how detailed and carefully and well painted this figure is. To get an overall sense of Schleich figures in general I recommend that you visit their website.

Griffins, as you may know, are legendary creatures that are part lion (body, tail and back legs) and part eagle (head, wings and talons as front feet). Griffin lore can be traced to ancient Greece as well as Persia and Egypt. Griffins are often said to represent qualities such as courage, boldness, power and majesty, and have been considered guardians of treasures, priceless possessions and in antiquity the divine.

We have had a lot of Schleich animals over the years, mostly the smaller animals so we were a little surprised to see the shear size of this model. But we were no surprised by the quality of the materials and artistry. We have had a few of the horse and rider combinations but this Griffin is far larger than any of the horse and rider sets. It is huge.

Probably one of the best things about this model is that it is slightly posable. As far as I know this is the first Schleich to have moveable parts, and although we love schleich, their standard static poses make them a little inflexible. In fact my son started to prefer the Papo Dinosaurs for their abilities to open and close jaws. But I think this griffin and rider has won him back.

Another nice and almost over the top feature is the magnetic butt of the rider. It gives him just enough adhesion that he stays mounted easily. We are looking forward to additional figures in this set.
