Initially I was going to do an old school mud type shower but after looking and listening to plenty of experts in the tile working field I decided to try the Kerdi shower system. I applied the Kerdi directly over drywall per the instructions. I even went ahead and bought the 1/8" square notch trowel. You do have to work fast so the thinset doesn't start to dry before you apply the Kerdi. I precut all the pieces before I started. Then I mixed enough unmodified thinset to do one wall. Dampen the drywall with a sponge before you apply the thinset. Overall the product was pretty easy to use if you follow the instructions. There are some good youtube videos you can find as well. My shower turned out great. I shared pictures so you can check them out in the product pictures.

Bought it off Amazon... called Schluter for a couple of questions relating to steam shower application...and guess what! All warranties are OFF (as in null and void) when purchased online. Not only that, but the Amazon (South Shore Flooring)membrane version is NOT the "DS" version recommended for steam shower applications... I am planning on installing it anyway...I've bought it now... but if I had known the warranty was NOT valid for online purchase, I would have purchased elsewhere.

My wife and I purchased this to install in a 3.5' deep x 6' tall x 6' wide tub surround. Kerdi is a great product, great idea. As a do-it-yourselfer, though, I am not quite as proficient with a trowel as what some of the pros probably are. As a result it take me longer to get the mortar on the wall and comb the mortar out. When are you doing a 6 foot tall sheet of this stuff, it's not helpful to be slow with a trowel. :-) The mortar I used was Laticrete Mega Bond on Hardiebacker backer board. I thoroughly wet down the backer board before applying the mortar, which helped my working time. However, I just found that working with that large of a sheet of Kerdi did not allow me enough time to get the mortar on, combed out and then pressed into the mortar. I wasn't satisfied with the amount of contact I got between the Kerdi and the mortar, but I'm pretty certain the install will still be OK. I'd say on average I was getting about 70% contact or so. Maybe better. By the end of the project, I realized that it would have been easier to do sheets that were maybe half as wide than the full width of 3-1/2 ft (or whatever it is, I forget). For an amateur like me, I think it would have resulted in better contact with the mortar with the tradeoff of having more overlapping seams.

This stuff is a great waterproofing product but DO NOT try to install with your spouse. A fight may ensue, you may be forced to find comfort nuzzled within your divorced neighbors bosom, you wife may find out, file for divorce and you lose your Corvette. But it really is a great waterproofing product.

Through Amazon, I ordered 108 sq feet of the Kerdi membrane, which should have been about 33 feet long. It came rolled up, of course. When I started cutting it up into sections for my shower stall, I discovered there was only a bit more than 16 feet. Obviously even though I ordered and paid for 108 sq feet, what I received was 54 sq feet. Not happy.

Update: I finally looked at the wrapper that was around the roll of membrane. It identifies the roll as 3'3" x 16'5" = 54 ft squared, Item# KERDI200/5M. I should have looked at this wrapper more closely when I opened the package. Somebody screwed up and I didn't catch it when I received the package.

Second update: Contacted South Shore Flooring and they promptly made things right. As far as the product goes, so far I have had no problems with it. Works as advertised. All in all, this turned out to be a good experience.

Another update: The Kerdi membrane was easy to put up on my shower walls (over cement board) using Versabond mortar (not recommended by Schluter) and the tiles went on over the Kerdi with absolutely no problem, again using Versabond. The shower has been in use now for several months and it looks great. Even more than that, I'm sure no water is getting past that Kerdi membrane. Great product.

I've been using Kerdi for years. This stuff is great. I've never had a shower leak when I combine Duroc and Kerdi, with the Kerdi overlaying the junction between two boards of Duroc. I particularly like the hairy, or fibrous, material on the tile side of the Kerdi. Tile just sticks. The Kerdi also provides just the smallest amount of movement so there seems to be less to zero cracking as the house groans and creaks. Especially in older homes.

This is a review on the Keri underlayment for tile, not a review on an uneducated opinion.
This is the only and best product to use for under your tile wall work in a moisture situation.
This is a waterproof material meant to be installed correctly under tile and will waterproof the wall.
It's expensive but it works. Instructions and video's are readily available on the net on how to install.
