Product Description

Schmetz Quilting Needles are specially designed for piecing and machine quilting, these needles have a special tapered point to penetrate multiple layers while preventing damage to the sensitive (and expensive!) fabrics used in quilting. The Schmetz quilting needles come in two sizes; 75/11 for piecing with 50 weight thread and 90/14 for heavier plain or variegated 40 weight threads for quilting. Size 90/14

If you machine piece or machine quilt with a 40-weight thread (read all the fine print on the thread spool carefully) the 90/14 size sewing machine needle is what you need. I use Schmetz needles and they have never given me any trouble in my Husqvana and Jamone machines. It is recommended that you replace all sewing machine needles after eight hours of use, but how are you to keep track? I just change the needle every time I am about to start a major new quilt project.

Quilting needles and topstitch needles give similar results for the purpose of quick clothing repairs. Use a 90/14 needle with the 40-weight "all-purpose thread" used for sewing clothing. If you do clothing repairs infrequently, there is no easy way to know when to change the needle. If it doesn't seem to go through the fabric "like butter," change it out. If you hear a popping sound, the dull tip is ripping the individual threads that make up the fabric. Don't save a dollar on a needle, only to ruin your garment.

These universal needles were recommended to me by my free motion quilting instruction. My brother machine absolutely doesn't like them and skips stitches and bounces a lot with them installed. I have since gone back to the brother name brand needles and don't have a problem.
