When he opened it on his birthday, the plexiglass on one corner had a crack where it was screwed together.

My first order, when taking it out of packaging, it had some reside of glue from the foam packaging on the acrylic.

This is the coolest-looking knife block / display I have ever seen. I love it. I think it looks so awesome in my kitchen. It works great. Magnets are definitely plenty strong. I think they may have recently changed their shipping process due to all the cracked plexiglass people have been complaining about, because ours arrived with a little note saying the corner screws in the plexiglass were not all the way screwed in yet, to prevent cracking. So we simply used a coin to tighten them and it's been perfect ever since.

I have a small collection of Japanese gyutos and American chef knives and was looking for storage to supplement my large knife block and thought the City Block looked like a good option. So, I bought two of them.
I was immediately disappointed in the quality. The City Block has a very thin oak veneer that is poorly laminated on what appears to be hard maple. The oak veneer was chipped, cracked, and peeling apart in multiple places on both blocks. Why use the oak veneer anyway? The maker could've used hard maple or oak, both cost about the same, no need to cover up attractive maple with poor-quality oak veneer.
I have chef knives of all sizes and the blocks were too small for my 270mm gyutos and my 10" chef knives, enough said, it didn't work.
If the City Block's flaws were corrected, made large enough to accommodate large chef knives, and, made with either solid oak or solid maple, I'd buy it. For now, it's a nice idea that was poorly executed.

I had to review this product because the other review in my opinion are not giving an accurate representation of it. I suspect that at some point this product was updated; the older reviews seem poor and the newer reviews are all 5 star.

First common complain: broken plexiglass. My unit arrived after international shipping with both plexiglass sheets in perfect condition. No cracks, no chips, no concerns. It is very well packaged surrounded by a few inches of dense foam inside a cardboard box, then inside Amazon's box. If other people received units with broken glass I suspect that it's because older versions had different packaging, mine seemed bomb proof.

Second common complaint: weak magnets. Give me a break. I have a Henckels Four Star Friodur meat cleaver that weighs 1 pound. It holds on the magnets with convincing integrity. I also have a Forschner flexible boning knife that must weigh less than an ounce. It holds securely and satisfyingly. Heavy knives and light knives alike do great on this block.

Great looking, functional, and safe product (compared to "open" magnets without a cover) that won't harm your blades (compared to exposed magnet or metal blocks). Would buy again and recommend without hesitation.

Arrived with broken plexyglass. Magnet is weak and does not hold the knives fast.Thinner profile ones retreat into the bowing, thin glass and the entire assembly has to be eptied and turned around. Terrible.

Looks okay and functional but the wood veneer started to delaminate within months. A hardwood block is a better purchase.

Was a little apprehensive at first in ordering the Downtown Block after reading a number of negative reviews. In the end decided to take a risk and went ahead ...... It was well worth it and the unit arrived very very well packed and in perfect condition. The minimalist style looks absolutely fabulous on the bench and the magnets are quite strong enough to hold all our knives including a cleaver. Could not be more happy.

We wanted to ditch the old wooden block and had tried a cork box draw version for our knives, but we missed the convenience of something on the counter. We hated the plastic block versions and did not want to drill into the back splash, so when I saw the magnetic standalone style I was all over it. I reviewed a lot of feedback for these styles and liked what I saw in this model. The magnets are just strong enough for our Henckels knives; they snap in place and come off easily. Both sides can be used so we have our steak knife set on it too. It looks lovely on our small modern counter - I'm so pleased I found this!

the first one I received was not in any packaging. The laminate was lifted in some areas and completely gone in others. I returned it and the new one came in a box with some Styrofoam but still had a corner of the laminate lifted. We decided to keep it and fix the corner but I was really disappointed.
