4.0 out of 5 stars Through a glass darkly, October 14, 2007

This review is from: Schmidt: Symphony No. 3 / Hindemith Concerto for Orchestra (Audio CD)
Schmidt's third symphony looks back to the world of Schubert and Bruckner (it was originally inspired by the festivities to commemorate Schubert's centenary), but portrayed as recollections of a more innocent age that is gone beyond recall. Schmidt's harmonies constantly shift, causing the music to float eerily - especially in the poignant slow movement. The playing is excellent, and makes a strong case for this neglected symphony - the CD is practially worth owning for the beautiful slow movement alone!

This review is from: Schmidt: Symphony No. 3 / Hindemith Concerto for Orchestra (Audio CD)
While I'm a fan of both composer's on this disk, neither work is terribly exciting. Jarvi and Chicago S.O. do a fine job, but listeners will be happier with other works by these composers. Try Schmidt's Symphony No. 2 (also recorded by Jarvi) or any of the Hindemith recordings made by Herber Blomstedt.
