Mention "college" to the parent of any teen, and stress lines deepen around the mouth while a panicked, wild look forms around the eyes. But while the kid is busily applying him or herself to SAT preparations (in order to get into a more expensive university), the parent who is going to fork out the money would be well-advised to browse through Cassidy's Scholarship Book. Assistance is out there for the informed applicant. Celebrities like Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and Oprah Winfrey have made big money available for students at Spellman, Howard, and Morehouse Universities. This book was a disappointment because it was so highly recommended yet I found nothing in it that I could use. Yes, I actually did go through it page by page. Doing my own research on the 'web provided me with all the information in this book and more but did not cost me anything except my time. There are various scholarship/grant searches you can do yourself through the 'web and they are free services. I bought this book because I thought it would round out my search and provide me with even more information, What a disappointment to realize I had just wasted money on a totally useless book. In my opinion you are much better off doing the searching yourself on the Internet instead of buying any of the books. The only reason I can think of to buy this or any other scholarship/grant book would be because a person does not have Internet access.

I was checking to see if there was a new edition of the Scholarship Book, and I was surprised by someone's review that it wasn't useful to people with Internet access. I have tried to use the online search engines for funding, but a lot of the organizations that came up for me were completely wrong. And out of the ones that I seemed eligible for, many came back with no forwarding address. While online searches are a good idea in theory, it doesn't work if the information isn't updated. I found this book much more useful. I was able to look up in the index what I qualified for, and only one place I wrote to came back as a wrong address. When I called the number listed in the book, I was able to get the current information. I'm still waiting to hear if I get any money for school, but I think this is a great book with a lot of opportunities listed.

As a non-traditional adult student, I used several of the scholarships resources in the last edition of this book and was an award recipient of these sources. This book helped me pay for my education, books, supplies, and even daycare for my son who was 3 years old at the time. I intend to order the newest edition of this book to once again assist in furthering my education and alleviating the need for student loans. Thank You!
